March Madness of a Different Sort

It's a quieter March than most with no NCAA championship basketball slated for San Antonio this year, but this is just a short break. The next five years will feature NCAA regional basketball events, including the 2008 Men’s Final Four and the 2010 Women’s Final Four.

We are thinking basketball, though, as the Sports Foundation board and staff gear up for a very busy late spring and summer. We are very excited that our Whataburger Roundball Ruckus 3-on-3 basketball tournament is an official Fiesta event this year. Our good friends at TETCO have agreed to distribute entry forms at all of their San Antonio area locations beginning March 21. Teams can register online as well. Sign up your team today and help us make this community event the most successful ever.

Summer 2005 will also bring two impactful events. The U.S. Taekwondo Junior Olympics is back and so are those junior Olympians in their combat uniforms along the River Walk – all 5000 of them! This summer also brings our first ever three-on-three soccer tournament. Hopefully, our lodging partners along the 410 loop and I-10 corridor will benefit.

You can get a jump on one of our fall events right now. Get online and get your tickets now for the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December. Only $45 gets you all the volleyball matches for an entire weekend. Don't be left out of this NCAA event. Tickets are going...going..going, and we want you to be going to the event too!

San Antonio is in the Swim

USA Swimming has announced that San Antonio is one of three finalists to host the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Swimming. Other finalists include Omaha, Nebraska and St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Sports Foundation’s bid calls for both the competition and warm-up pools to be constructed in the Alamodome, maximizing the athletes’ and fans’ convenience and comfort. The event, which brings five nights of international prime-time coverage on NBC-TV, would be a tremendous win for the city.

San Antonio’s bid chairman Jim Callaway, group president of SBC and immediate past-chairman of the Sports Foundation, says San Antonio is confident in its bid. Honorary bid chairman, gold medal Olympic swimmer Josh Davis, believes the athletes will appreciate the Alamodome’s flexibility. “As an athlete you want to have all of your energy saved for the race, and with everything under one roof you are able to efficiently manage your energy,” he says.

USA Swimming has indicated that they will want to conduct site visits with all of the finalists in late April and early May. They are scheduled to make a final selection in June.

Hustle Up and Register Now for the Ruckus!

The San Antonio Sports Foundation has begun counting down the days until its 2005 Whataburger Roundball Ruckus. The annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take place at the Alamodome on April 23 & 24, so now is the time to register. Men and women, boys and girls of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to round up their three to five person team and register online, or call (210) 820-2100.

The entry fee for each team is $100 and the first 200 teams to sign up receive a free basketball. The registration deadline is April 18th at 5 p.m., so teams should hustle up before the buzzer sounds!

Club Volleyball Heats Up!

Two months into the youth club volleyball season, and Texas is off to a great start and is shining in the national spotlight. The 19th Annual Las Vegas Classic, which fields some of the most competitive teams in the country and has become one of the top tournaments for college scouts to attend, took place the third weekend of February. With unprecedented results, Texas claimed the top 5 teams in the 17’s age division. Congratulations to the following squads:

1 - Texas Tornados 17 Nike (Houston)
2 - Alamo 17 Kaepa (San Antonio)
3 - Willowbrook 17Asics (Houston)
3 - Texas Advantage 17Asics (Dallas)
5 - Austin 17 Mizuno (Austin)

This just proves the NCAA knew what they were doing when they chose San Antonio as host of the 2005 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship! Volleyball is alive and well in Texas, and we encourage everyone to find a tournament near you and support the NCAA stars of tomorrow. Better yet, if interested in sponsoring or taking your club or high school team to the Championship, call Jenny Carnes at (210) 820-2104 for group sales of 10 or more. Calling All Volunteers!

As mentioned above, it’s time to get ready for the 2005 Whataburger Roundball Ruckus and volunteers are needed! Be a part of this fun family event. Volunteers are needed to work packet pickup at the Alamodome on Friday, April 22 and during the tournament itself on April 23 and 24. We have both morning and afternoon shifts and need help with the basketball throw, score keeping, court monitoring, registering, and general clean up. If you are interested in volunteering please call Donna Browne at (210) 820-2191 or email her at dbrowne@sanantoniosports.org. No experience required!
