International Basketball
in San Antonio
Is your fantasy playing in the NBA? Helping
to discover the next Manu? Just enjoying a great international
basketball game after the Spurs win their next championship?
We can help you with it all!
This summer, the San Antonio Sports Foundation will
have the privilege to partner with USA Basketball to
host a major FIBA international event at St. Mary’s
University (Bill Greehey Arena) June 28– July
2. The 2006 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for
Men, which we're tagging the Tournament of
the Americas, will feature eight teams from North America,
Central America, the Caribbean and South America. This
is an event at which Manu Ginobili was discovered. Other
NBA players who have participated in previous tournaments
include Carmelo Anthony, Stephon Marbury, Grant Hill
and Allan Houston.
You guessed it…we have work ahead. Satisfy that
fantasy and help San Antonio be a major player in putting
on this international event. How?
- Sign up for one of our working committees: ticket
sales and marketing, food services, transportation,
translation services, game operations, sellers and
ushers, and much more.
- Agree to be one of our team hosts and enjoy spending
six special days with a team of future stars.
- Secure a donation from a restaurant that will host
a team (20 members) for one lunch or dinner.
- Find a group of friends that will attend a session
(only a $5 ticket).
- Help give these players the opportunity to play
in front of an appreciative audience.
- Bring a young basketball player so he or she can
meet the future stars.
The fun won’t stop until the teams depart on
July 3rd. Thanks to the volunteers, each one of our
international guests will have a great amount of respect
for San Antonio and the community that embraces this
kind of event.
Just
click here and we will have the staff member
or the specific committee chairman in your area of interest
contact you now!

Freedom Elementary Students
Learn ABC’s of Finance
Thirty
children in the Sports Foundation’s after school
program at Southside ISD recently learned about the
ABC’s of finance. As part of Smith Barney’s
STTAR (Success through Tutoring, Athletics, and Role-Modeling)
program, Sports Foundation board member and Smith Barney
Senior Vice President Lisa Blonkvist
spent an afternoon teaching children about saving and
investing.
With rapt attention, the children learned through participating
in games and activities about money, needs and wants,
saving, as well as about making good choices in saving
and investing. Prizes and take-home goodies were part
of the fun, and the children loved it. They left with
an appreciation of how money works and many shared it
with their parents.

Charles Mullaney, Dedicated
Coach
Charles Mullaney has
been coaching soccer at summer camps since he was 16.
But a chance encounter with Dreams for Youth badminton
coach Kampol Surapiboonchai launched some new pursuits
for the 27 year-old UTSA graduate.
Charles
graduated from UTSA in December with a degree in kinesiology
and his teaching certification. Kampol
saw him student teaching at Gates Academy in SAISD and
was impressed. He asked if Charles wanted a job coaching.
Now Charles, who has a wide range of coaching skills,
instructs team handball, badminton, gymnastics and volleyball
for the Sports Foundation at schools in the After School
All Stars program and at Miller’s Pond and Meadow
Cliff Parks and Recreation Centers. He went from coaching
two days a week to six. He enjoys interacting with the
kids and sharing in their successes as they master a
new sport.
Charles hopes to land a full-time teaching position,
but has no plans to give up coaching. With his versatility
and positive attitude, it can only be a plus for the
children and the Sports Foundation.
