Congratulations, Huskies!
NCAA Volleyball Championship A Success
The
2005 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship
couldn’t have been more exciting as the nation’s
number one team faced the number two team in the Alamodome
last week. Ultimately, it was the Washington
Huskies who defeated the #1 Nebraska
Cornhuskers for the title on Saturday night.
From the first rounds with Santa Clara
and Tennessee, through the American
Volleyball Coaches Association convention and the 25th
Anniversary celebration, to the San Antonio Local Organizing
Committee’s (SALOC) pre-game Backyard Bar-B-Q
at Sunset Station, the event was a huge success.
Congratulations to all four teams who earned their
way to the Championship tournament. We especially want
to thank our SALOC partners, UTSA and
the City of San Antonio, and our many
local vendors who made the Championship a fun and successful
event.
A special “thank you” to our Sports Foundation
volunteers who again welcomed our visitors with their
customary smiles and worked hard to deliver another
fantastic event.

Valero Go!Kids Challenge™
Wrap Up
After 11 weeks, more than 50,000 children
have each completed walking a 26.2-mile marathon in
the 2005 Valero Go!Kids Challenge™.

Many of those healthy kids and their families marked
their accomplishment at the Subway Victory Lap Celebration
on Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Alamodome where they were
awarded medals and t-shirts. A health and fitness fair
added to the excitement of the day. Congratulations
to all of our Go!Kids and a sincere “thank you”
to the sponsors who make this program a reality for
our community.

Golf Classic Scores Rewards
for Players and Kids
Golfers took to the links on Monday, Dec. 12, for another
great San Antonio Sports Foundation Golf Classic at
the Dominion Country Club. The team from Merrill
Lynch (pictured right), which included Sports
Foundation board member Dick Lord,
took top honors. The Valero team came in second, and
a foursome led by Sports Foundation board member Cecil
Bain placed third.
Thank you to all of our team sponsors for helping the
Sports Foundation raise more than $32,000 to support
our Dreams for Youth and Valero Go!Kids Challenge programs.
Special thanks go to event chairman and Sports Foundation
board member Carlos Ramos and the entire
golf committee. Thousands of children’s lives
are improved because of your generosity.

Volunteers of the Year
Everyone
knows them as “The Goddesses.” Mary
Holland and Shelia Jones (pictured
right with Sports Foundation staff member Jenny Carnes)
have been named the 2005 San Antonio Sports Foundation
Volunteers of the Year.
This dynamic duo has contributed thousands of hours
to the Sports Foundation since the 2002 NCAA Women’s
Final Four. They served as volunteer chairs for the
2004 NCAA Men’s Final Four and this year’s
NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship.
Their terrific attitudes are infectious and their dedication
to this organization is much appreciated. Thank you,
Goddesses!

Vaya
con Dios, Malcolm
We are sad to share the news of the passing of our
very dear friend and long-time volunteer, Malcolm
Grieg. Malcolm, whose Cajun humor and strong
work ethic endeared him to everyone who knew him, will
be deeply missed. He and his wife Ethel were named the
2004 Sports Foundation Volunteers of the Year, and despite
his battle with cancer, Malcolm remained a loyal volunteer
up to the end. Our deepest sympathy extends to Ethel
and the entire Grieg family. We’ll miss you, Malcolm.
