Sports Improve Girls' Lives
Research shows girls who participate in
sports are academically more successful, more likely
to graduate from high school, more likely to matriculate
in college, and experience greater career success. Participation
in sports and other physical activities can help reduce
a girl’s health risk for obesity, diabetes, heart
disease, osteoporosis, breast cancer, depression and
unintended teen pregnancy.
Knowing these facts, please support our upcoming women’s
championships in San Antonio beginning with the Big
12 Women’s Soccer Championship on Nov 2, 4 and
6 as well as the Division I Women’s NCAA Volleyball
Championship on December 15 and 17. More importantly,
join me in bringing a young girl or sponsoring a girl’s
team to one of these events. They will meet their role
models!
See details in this newsletter on how the Sports Foundation
will do the work for you. We know how important this
effort can be in making a difference in the lives of
girls in San Antonio. Thanks.

Valero Volunteers Paint
DFY Center
Volunteers
from Valero Energy Corporation took
advantage of a beautiful day last Saturday to paint
the exterior of the Dreams for Youth Training Center,
525 San Pedro Ave. The Sports Foundation is grateful
for the time and effort put in by the volunteers, many
of whom brought their children.
They included: Damon Luckey, Cassandra
Gonzalez, Caroline Mowen,
Corey Mowen, Chris Abbott,
Mellisa White, Jesse Twillie,
Robert Whie and Sarah G. Mendez.
Painting the exterior was the final step needed before
a sign can be installed outside identifying the center.

Valero Go!Kids Challenge™
& Saints
The
2005 Valero Go!Kids Challenge is in its sixth week and
tens of thousands of elementary school students in San
Antonio, Boerne and New Braunfels are walking every
day toward their goal of completing a marathon by December
4. Valero Go!Kids Challenge participants at Locke-Hill
Elementary got a motivating boost by a visit
from New Orleans Saints Ben Archibald
on Tuesday.
Teachers there nominated their school for the visit
via www.GoKidsChallenge.com,
the official Web site for the Sports Foundation’s
innovative fitness program. Ben encouraged the kids
to exercise daily, eat well and avoid dangerous substances
– an especially relevant message during this national
anti-drug Red Ribbon Week.

DFY Diving Gets New Coach
Dreams
for Youth diving has a new location and a new coach.
This fall, the program was moved from the Natatorium
to Northside ISD Aquatics. Thirty participants—mostly
beginners—take lessons twice a week, learning
the basics of diving. New DFY diving coach, Emma
Kanko, dove for four years with Taft High School
where she was trained by Community Olympic Development
Program coach Tommy Law.
The Northwest Vista college freshman
has always had an interest in diving. “I love
the water and watching divers. Plus it’s cool
to do a sport where you fly,” Emma explains. She
wanted to find a way to continue her hobby after graduating
from high school, and started volunteering as a coach
last spring. Tommy Law and Stan
Randall, director of diving for the AAU, were
looking for someone to take over the Dreams for Youth
program and she fit the bill. Now Emma is working with
beginners and helping them enjoy the sport she loves.
For more information on Dreams for Youth
diving, contact Alma Striker at 210-820-2113 or astriker@sanantoniosports.org.

Occasionally, we profile one of our
Sports Foundation staff members in Sidelines to better
acquaint you with the people behind the scenes who are
working daily to fulfill the mission of the Sports Foundation.
Anna
Gomez-Vazquez is the program manager for the
2005 Valero Go!Kids Challenge™. A graduate of
UTSA with a degree in public health, this Laredo native
joined the Sports Foundation staff in March 2005.
• How
are you using your degree in public health in your current
position?
A key part of community health is
developing and implementing healthy programs in the
community. As program manager for the San Antonio Sports
Foundation, I have applied my past studies in effective
program management.
•
What are your goals for the Valero Go!Kids Challenge™?
There are two main goals I plan
to accomplish. First, to get every single San Antonio
elementary student involved with the Valero Go!Kids
Challenge. Second, to eventually have every child log
on and submit their miles through the website.
• So after 7 months,
what’s your impression of the Sports Foundation?
The Sports Foundation is an amazing
organization that unites children and families through
sports and physical activity. What I like the most is
how the staff works so well together, everyone is always
ready and willing to help each other in whichever way
they can.
• What is something
you think very few people know about you?
Every summer, since I was in high
school, I have put together a summer camp for girls
ages 8-13 with the help of my sisters. Our camp teaches
girls crafts, cooking, dancing and a lot of other fun
activities.
