We are anticipating a
VERY busy fall and cannot do it without you.
Help us now meet our annual membership goal. We need
200 new members and memberships start at $50. Help us
do it now! Just click
here to become a Sports Foundation Champion
today.
In addition to our third annual Valero Go!Kids Challenge™,
which will involve every elementary student in the area
in a healthy walking program, there are two big community
events that will make 2005 a successful year.
You can be a part of the success by:
1) supporting the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship
tournament in November...we want to keep the tournament
in San Antonio! 2) buying tickets for the NCAA
Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.
We want both the Big 12 and the NCAA to say that "no
one does it like San Antonio." Please help us make
them say San Antonio is the best.
Thanks for all that you do!

Vote for Ross!
The
United States Olympic Committee has announced that San
Antonio resident and Paralympic gold medalist Ross
Davis is a finalist for the U.S. Olympic Hall
of Fame Class of 2006. The Sports Foundation is very
proud of Ross and his many accomplishments and asks
your help to make sure he is selected.
The U.S. Olympic Committee is inviting
the public to vote online at www.usolympichalloffame.com
to help determine who will comprise the next class of
inductees. Five individual Olympians, one Olympic team,
one Paralympian and one coach, along with a veteran
and a special contributor, will be honored during the
U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Presented by Allstate in December.
Davis has won nine Paralympic track
and field medals including two gold medals and a Paralympic
record in the 100 meter race. He participated in the
2000 Paralympics in Sydney, the 1996 Paralympics in
Atlanta and the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona. Davis
is a former member of the United States Olympic Committee
board of directors and was a nominee for the 1996 USOC
Sportsman of the Year, an honor that was eventually
awarded to track superstar Michael Johnson. Davis was
inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame in
2005.
Vote
now and help get Ross selected for this
wonderful honor!

On
Saturday, the San Antonio Sports Foundation's Dreams
for Youth program hosted Big Brothers and Big
Sisters of South Texas at the DFY Training
Center. Twelve "Littles" were matched with
12 "Bigs" for a day and enjoyed an afternoon
of fencing, food and fun as part of Big Brothers and
Sisters' Magic While You Wait program.

Just Call him “Prof”
Dreams for Youth fencing coach Stephen
Renya has been named adjunct professor in the
department of kinesiology at San Antonio College. In
this capacity he will teach the fencing classes, taking
over for long-time professor Olympian Les Bleamaster.
Reyna has been teaching epee for the
San Antonio Sports Foundation for a year. He is one
of the few Prevost d' Arme in San Antonio, an international
ranking just below Fencing Master. In addition to teaching
fencing classes, Renya is a math instructor at the college.

DFY Fencers Earn Their
Colors
The Dreams for Youth fencing program
has implemented a color-coding system that ranks athletes
based on skill and ability. Modeled after the system
used in karate, fencers have 12 levels to achieve, with
the last three geared toward attaining coaching certification.
Assistant Director of Dreams for Youth José Sanchez
believes that implementing the system will provide an
incentive to athletes, as well as make progress more
tangible. Fencers will receive a patch, and the color
will change as they attain greater skills and master
technique. José will administer both a practical
and written test to rank fencers and says that the system
is unique and separates us from the other clubs.
According to José, the ranking
system lends itself as an assessment tool to gauge a
student’s knowledge and progress. It also streamlines
curriculum, making the dissemination of knowledge from
teacher to student much easier. “Utilizing this
method puts us on a path toward developing lifelong
recreational fencers and identifying competitive fencers,”
explains José. “Through this color-coded
system, we can provide a basis for our fencers to become
better, as well as become rated referees and coaches.”
For more information on the Dreams
for Youth fencing program, contact José Sanchez
at 226-5479, or e-mail him at jsanchez@sanantoniosports.org.
