After all the rain we’ve had in San Antonio, you’d think everyone would be eager to get outside for some healthy physical activity. Hopefully, you’re doing just that, but in case you don’t like sweating in the muggy aftermath of our rainy season, we have a solution. Round up a few of your friends or family members and sign up for this month’s indoor 3-on-3 basketball tournament – the San Antonio Sports Foundation’s Streetball Slam fueled by Tesoro. Boys and girls, men and women of all skill levels will hit the courts in air-conditioned comfort at the H.B. Gonzalez Convention Center on August 11-12. The entry deadline is next Wednesday, so check out the event details below, sign up today and make plans to beat the heat with us.
As summer winds down this month, and preparations gear up for a busy school year please help us encourage the children in your life to get some exercise every day. It’s the only way we’ll ever beat the childhood obesity epidemic and make this a fit city for our families. Remember our Sports Foundation tag line -- we make it happen – but we can’t do it without you.

Sports Foundation Awarded USOC Grant
The United States Olympic Committee has awarded the San Antonio Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth program $10,000. The grant will be used to expose and increase participation of urban youth in the Olympic sport of fencing. The grant is part of the USOC’s “Olympic Opportunity Fund,” an initiative to encourage growth of Olympic sports involvement through community-based athletic programs.
In 1993, the Sports Foundation established Dreams for Youth (DFY) to open pathways to personal development for inner-city children by providing access to Olympic sports. The San Antonio Sports Foundation’s fencing program has been in existence since 1997.
The Sports Foundation’s fencing program is unique because it supplies equipment for participants, and its fees are considerably lower than other private fencing programs, allowing lower-income families access to the sport. Fencing classes are offered for all age levels and for those who wish to seriously compete or who simply want to fence for fun. For more information on the Sports Foundation’s fencing program, visit www.sanantoniosports.org/fencing or call 210-226-5479.

Circle of Champions Attracts Leaders
We are excited to announce the launch of the new San Antonio Sports Foundation Circle of Champions. This exclusive group of young leaders in San Antonio have been chosen by members of the Sports Foundation board of directors and staff and possess professional sales experience, an enthusiasm for sports and fitness, and a genuine interest in community involvement.
They will be advocates for the Sports Foundation and its membership program. Next month we’ll announce the inaugural members of the Circle of Champions. For more information, contact Mary Ullmann Japhet at mjaphet@sanantoniosports.org or 820-2123.

2007 Judo National Junior Olympics
The 2007 USA Judo National Junior Olympics was a huge success. Over 800 athletes competed in this Sports Foundation-hosted event on July 20 and 21 at the Freeman Coliseum. Six local judo athletes participated in this event and all did an excellent job. Brittni Bradford took first place her division, Matthew Zuniga placed fifth in his division, Johnathan Stafford took second in his division, and Athan Davidson, 6, tied for fifth place. Texas teams earned the most points in the overall competition, earning the state title. Congratulation to all the athletes!
A special thank you to KABB-TV sportscaster Drea Avant who did a great story on Brittni Bradford (visit http://kabb.com/vod/videoplayer.shtml, click on Sports stories and scroll down to “Judo”) and to Annie Getsinger of the San Antonio Express-News whose coverage of the event appears in this week’s Neighbors section of the paper.

The Sports Foundation is proud to announce its new partnership with All Can Ski, which will be held at SeaWorld San Antonio on August 29 and 30. Started in 1992, this event was created by Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital to provide the opportunity for persons with physical disabilities to experience water skiing.
This year, 80 individuals are expected to participate, including several Wounded Warriors from the Center for the Intrepid. Ross Davis, Sports Foundation creative director and gold medal Paralympian has been associated with the event for many years. “One of the greatest things about All Can Ski is the freedom that people with disabilities experience on the water. Empty wheelchairs, crutches and prosthetic limbs litter the dock as skiers cut up waves behind the boat,” said Davis.
Registration is now available online at SanAntonioSports.org. The $35 fee per skier covers instruction, skiing, lunch, and a t-shirt. The registration deadline is Wednesday, August 22.
Formerly hosted by Warm Springs Rehabilitation System, the Sports Foundation will conduct the skiing experience in partnership with the Warm Springs Foundation, SeaWorld San Antonio, Blaze Sports America, Texas Adaptive Aquatics, and PegLeg Adventures to continue this tradition in San Antonio.

CODP Diver Named All American
Sports Foundation Community Olympic Development Program diver Marshall Edwards was named a High School All American in diving. This status was only awarded to 130 male high school divers in the United States. Marshall will be a junior at Health Careers High School this fall and has only been diving for 2 ½ years. For this former gymnast, diving came easily, but it is the thrill of the sport that keeps him in it. “Years of gymnastics have given Marshall an edge over his competitors when it comes to getting in and out of diving positions,” says CODP coach, Tommy Law. “His diving tends to be smoother and more graceful than his peers.”
Marshall is currently participating in the Alamo Area Aquatics Diving summer camp, which means practicing five hours a day, five days a week, and two hours on Saturdays. With his dedication and talent, Marshall hopes to continue his success and earn a college scholarship.

Danny Buck
Congratulations to San Antonio Sports Foundation board member Danny Buck on his move to The Trust Company. Formerly with Sterling Bank, Buck has joined The Trust Company as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer, managing commercial banking services and serving as the director and chairman of the directors’ loan committee.
Danny is a member of the Sports Foundation events committee and is chair of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute table sales committee. Being involved with the Sports Foundation was a natural fit for Danny. “Participating in, coaching, and just being around sports my whole life was a part of the initial attraction to the Sports Foundation. Before joining the board, I never fully understood the full impact and broad reach of the organization. Now I know, and I am honored and proud to be a part of it.”
Follow Danny’s lead and become a member of the Sports Foundation. Click “join the team” at SanAntonioSports.org for all the details or contact Dorsena Picknell at dpicknell@sanantoniosports.org or 820-2112.

Congratulations to our terrific program manager and member/sponsor fulfillment staffer Anna Gomez-Vasquez who married Omar Gonzalez in a beautiful wedding in their hometown of Laredo on July 21. After a fabulous European honeymoon, Anna will be back at work next week. Anna, pictured left, was a good sport to don a "bridal veil" during a staff celebration in her honor.
We wish all the best to Gretchen Garceau-Kragh, who left the Sports Foundation in July for a position with Seton Home, a nonprofit organization that provides shelter and support services for homeless pregnant or parenting teen moms and their babies.
