Welcome, Coaches!
Congratulations to the
Texas High School Coaches Association for having their
most successful Texas High School Coaches clinic in
San Antonio this week. With over 11,500 coaches and
750 vendors it has been a slam dunk! Many thanks to
the staff at the San Antonio Convention and Visitors
Bureau, the Convention Center, the Alamodome, Trinity
University and St. Mary’s University for providing
outstanding services and facilities that resulted in
impressive all star games. Congratulations to all the
players and coaches. The Sports Foundation wishes you
all very rewarding upcoming seasons. Hurry back to San
Antonio!
Again, thanks for all of our partners for helping to
bring sports conventions and meetings to our great city.

Sports Foundation Hosts
Regional 3v3 Soccer Shootout
The San Antonio Sports Foundation
will host the Kick-It 3v3 South-East Central Regional
Soccer Shootout Aug. 6-7 at Alamo Sportsplex, located
at 7390 FM 1560. The Sports Foundation expects about
220 teams of six to participate in the event. Competition
is scheduled to begin each morning at 8:30.
The Kick-It 3v3 Soccer Tour is a weekend soccer festival
open to players of all ages and skill levels. The regional
tournament in San Antonio will serve as a qualifier
for the 3v3 Soccer National Championships at Disney’s
Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla. on Jan. 14. Participants
compete in divisions including five- to 18-year-old
competitive, five- to 18-year-old recreational, coed,
adult open and over 30.
“The Sports Foundation is excited about hosting
this soccer regional in San Antonio,” said Sports
Foundation executive director Dr. Susan Blackwood.
“It’s our first time to host this event,
and our staff and volunteers are looking forward to
delivering a terrific tournament for the athletes, their
families and spectators.”
The Sports Foundation thanks Mike Kiolbassa
and the Kiolbassa Provision Company
for helping to make the 3v3 soccer tournament a success
by donating Kiolbassa sausage for the concession stands.
Visitors from around the state will get a real taste
of San Antonio from this homegrown company.
Many of the events that the Sports Foundation hosts
provide economic impact to the community but little
opportunity to generate revenue for the organization.
Through support from Kiolbassa and all of our sponsors
that help us generate this income, the Sports Foundation
is able to continue to host competitive events that
bring more visitors to San Antonio and benefit the entire
community.

Volleyball Gears Up!
With
the 2005 volleyball season quickly approaching,
two-a-days around the corner and the Division
I Women’s Championship less than 5 months
away, the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee
has turned up the heat!
Staff members were on hand at both annual conventions
for the Texas Girls Coaches Association and the
Texas High School Coaches Association giving out
Championship information at the exhibits and speaking
at each volleyball session. In addition, members
of SALOC began their first monthly committee meetings
this week, which will continue through the tournament
in December. Representatives discussed everything
from marketing to hospitality, volunteers, facilities,
the ‘look’, and youth clinics.
If you haven’t visited our 2005 volleyball
Web site lately, check out www.saloc.org
for new information regarding free t-shirts, sales
incentive programs and suites for purchase! And
don’t forget, great tickets are still available
for both the UTSA Dome Rally, September 9-11 and
the Championship, December 15 & 17.

Our Man Manny Manny
Ortiz, general manager of the Plaza Club, has
been involved with the Sports Foundation for about two
years and is currently a board member. The Plaza
Club generously hosts quarterly informational
luncheons for prospective members of the Sports Foundation.
Ortiz said he supports the Sports Foundation
because of its impact on San Antonio’s youth.
He said watching the expressions on kids’ faces
while they are learning and competing in sports has
been one of the most memorable experiences he has had
while being involved in the Sports Foundation.
“It’s all about giving
back to the community,” Ortiz said. “It
is so great for kids to have the opportunity to get
involved with gymnastics, fencing, tennis or any sport.”
“The Plaza Club, with its spectacular
views atop the downtown Frost Bank tower, offers us
an impressive venue for us to entertain prospective
donors and events rights-holders,” said Dr. Susan
Blackwood, Sports Foundation executive director. “We’re
grateful to Manny and his staff for making all of our
experiences there positive ones.”
