Roundball Ruckus
Don’t miss all the hoops hype!
Roundball Ruckus, an official Fiesta event, is nearly
here. There is still time to get your team registered.
This event has become the place to be, to be seen
and better yet, to get moving. The Sports Foundation
is committed to not only bringing major, impactful events
to our community, but also to staging quality, wholesome
events to encourage healthy lifestyles. Basketball,
like many of our community events, is a playground sport
that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages. You remember
the playgrounds? Let’s give our youth the playground
type of fun that they so rightfully deserve. It only
takes three participants. Not much to organize or do,
just register and have some real, old fashioned FUN!
So sign up your team or your kids'. You’ll find
more Roundball Ruckus details below.
If you can’t participate, come watch or even
better yet, volunteer. Volunteer spots are still available!

San Antonio’s Hospitality Industry Soars
San
Antonio’s hospitality industry is making a big
impact! On Tuesday, the Greater San Antonio Chamber
of Commerce and the San Antonio Area Tourism Council
announced that the industry’s economic impact
in 2004 totaled $8.7 billion, up from $7.2 billion in
2002. The industry contributed almost $100 million in
taxes and fees to the city of San Antonio and more than
$161 million to all local governments combined, up $1
million from 2002. The 2004 figures also show that the
industry employed 93,999, workers or one in every eight
in San Antonio.
The Sports Foundation is a proud partner of our city’s
hospitality industry and is pleased to note that in
2004, the year measured in this study, the NCAA Men’s
Final Four at the Alamodome generated $55 million in
direct visitor spending. The 2004 Final Four was hosted
by the Sports Foundation, the City of San Antonio and
UTSA.

Calling All Volunteers!
Want to see some great basketball up-close and meet
the future stars of the NBA? There are two opportunities
for you; the first is the Roundball Ruckus and then
the 2006 FIBA Americas U-18 Championship for Men. Roundball
Ruckus will take place April 29-30 at the Alamodome.
Watch the basketball games as a court monitor or help
with various contests. All Roundball Ruckus volunteers
get a t-shirt and free parking.
We especially need help hosting the 2006 FIBA
Americas U18 Championship for Men, the “Tournament
of the Americas,” being played in the United States
for the first time. Teams from Argentina, the Bahamas,
Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico,
the United States, and Uruguay will be competing for
qualification to play in the Under-19 Championship in
2007. We are in great need of English/Spanish bilingual
speakers to help throughout the five-day tournament.
Also, there is a need for drivers to transport the teams
to various locations.
You won’t want to miss either opportunity to
get involved and have fun. Contact Nancy Christensen
at nchristensen@sanantoniosports.org
or (210) 820-2191 for more information.

“Got Game?”
Join Roundball Ruckus
The San Antonio Sports Foundation will host the sixth
annual Roundball Ruckus 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament
April 29 and 30 at the Alamodome (parking lot B). An
official Fiesta event, Roundball Ruckus will offer teams
more than just court action. Former NBA All Star and
San Antonio Spur George Gervin will judge the slam dunk
contest on Saturday. Activities also include a daily
3-point contest, free-throw contest, Hot Shot Shootout,
and raffle for a jersey autographed by Sean Elliott.
Between games, participants and spectators can check
out AT&T’s GameRiot, the largest traveling
video game festival and competition in the country.
Early registration deadline is this Monday, April
17. The entry fee is $100 for each three-to-five member
team. The registration fee increases to $125 until the
final entry deadline of April 24.
Entry fee proceeds for each three-to-five member team
will benefit the Sports Foundation’s Dreams for
Youth program. Visit
our website, read about the official rules, and register
your team today.

Help Feed Our International Guests
From
June 28-July 2, San Antonio will be hosting the 2006
FIBA Americas U-18 Championship for Men at Bill Greehey
Arena on the campus of St. Mary’s University.
As mentioned above, basketball teams from eight nations
will be competing.
We want to showcase San Antonio by offering the best
hospitality to these teams. The Sports Foundation needs
to provide the teams and officials with lunch and dinner
every day during their stay. We are looking for area
restaurants to provide vouchers and/or scheduled meals
for the teams and officials from June 26-July 2. Each
voucher should be for a maximum of 20 people. A total
of 126 meals are needed. Gratuity will be paid by the
Sports Foundation at an agreed upon percentage.
In exchange for providing vouchers or meals, the Sports
Foundation is offering the following benefits per meal
provided: two VIP tournament passes, signage in venue
and at hospitality events, game program recognition,
memorabilia from the events, and recognition in the
foundation’s e-newsletter (8,000 subscriber base).

Final Four Reports
Nothing quite captivates the sports world like the
“madness” of the NCAA basketball tournament
and 2006 was certainly no disappointment! From buzzer
beaters, second half comebacks, overtime thrillers and
Cinderella stories, NCAA basketball proved once again
why it’s one of the most exciting events in the
world, and it’s why San Antonio is so proud to
be a part of the NCAA family.
Members of the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee
traveled to both 2006 Final Four host cities to attend
games, special events, future hosts meetings and facility
tours for the Men’s and Women’s events in
Indianapolis and Boston. Congratulations to both cities
on a job well done and two wonderful tournaments!
NCAA staff will now shift their focus to Atlanta,
site of the 2007 Men’s Final Four before returning
to the Alamo City in 2008. SALOC will prepare for the
Final Four with the 2007 San Antonio Men’s Regional
March 22 & 24 in the Alamodome. For information
on San Antonio’s upcoming NCAA events and ticket
packages, please call (210) 820-2104 or download
your order form here today.

Seniors Get Fit with Sports
Foundation
The Sports Foundation’s Dreams for
Youth Training Center is located across the street from
Via Tranchess, a San Antonio Housing Authority retirement
home for 80 senior citizens. Youth fencing classes take
place in the afternoon and evening, and the training
center was not being used in the morning. What better
time to reach out to our neighbors and provide activities
and a place for the senior citizens to go? With a $50,000
grant from Bexar County and a $2,000 grant from District
1 City Councilman Roger Flores, the program became a
reality in February.
Each
weekday morning, residents of Via Tranchess are offered
light aerobics and exercise. They are having a ball!
Coordinator Delia Martinez puts them through their paces
and creates a positive atmosphere that promotes a healthy
lifestyle and general wellness.
“I have definitely seen a difference since we
started,” Delia proclaims. “I see improved
balance, breathing and attitude.” She also says
the social aspect cannot be overlooked. “They
look forward to it, but it is also producing wonderful
results.” After just a few short weeks, Delia
says it is rewarding to see her charges walk without
running out of breath, and now with better equilibrium,
they are able to walk a straight line. “They tell
me how good they feel.” Delia, who is no slouch
and has always been active, says her own cholesterol
has gone down as a result of leading the program.
The seniors meet five days a week from 8:30-11:30.
Others over 55 are welcome. Contact Alma Striker at
210-820-2113 for details.

Dreams for Youth Volleyball
The Dreams for Youth club volleyball 12 year olds won
the New Braunfels Limited #1 Tournament in New Braunfels
April 1st.
They defeated four opponents before prevailing in the
championship, defeating Texas Stars in three games.
On March 25th, the 17 year old DFY club volleyball team
won their division at Volleyfest at San Antonio College,
defeating the San Antonio Elite Red Hots in the championship
game.

In Their Own Words...
Occasionally, Sidelines profiles of one
of our key supporters. Bill Levine
is relatively new to our board of directors, but he
has jumped in with both feet. He's an individual member,
a member of our facilities sub-committee and frequently
attends Sports Foundation events. Bill is employed as
general counsel for The Gambrinus Company,
an importer and owner of premier beer brands and a long-time
corporate sponsor of the Sports Foundation. He's married,
has a young son and daughter and has been a lifelong
sports participant. Here is why Bill supports the Sports
Foundation in his own words.
"I
believe sports are important not only for the physical
and mental benefits, but also for the life values that
they teach, especially to kids - such as teamwork, how
to win/lose, the value of practice and hard work etc....
I played hockey and soccer in high school and one year
of soccer in college. I still play hockey here in San
Antonio in a men's league and I coach my son's hockey
team. I also play a lot of golf.
The Gambrinus Company has supported Sports Foundation
events for a number of years, and we decided to take
that support to a higher level this year. The Sports
Foundation does so many great things for the San Antonio
community, and we wanted to provide greater support
for these valuable programs. From a personal standpoint,
when I moved here 6 years ago, I heard and read about
the Sports Foundation and thought it would be something
that I would like to get involved with someday. I think
it is important to be involved in community organizations
which is a lesson learned from my parents. To be able
to match that with something I absolutely love - sports
- is great. I am lucky and very happy that I am on the
Board and look forward to learning more about what Sports
Foundation does and contributing in any way I can."
