Let’s Honor Our Legends

How time flies! It hardly seems possible that in a few short weeks we will be inducting another six individuals into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. Thanks to all of you who spent time this summer nominating your favorite hero or heroine. Those names will continue to be on the long, long list of deserving candidates that are reviewed by the 80+ voters each year before the final selection by the Tribute committee.

February 17 will be their night in lights as Bob Bass, Cito Gaston, Mary Nan West, Sean Elliott, Pinkey Whitney, and Thomas Lott receive the recognition they so rightfully deserve. Also being honored by the San Antonio Express-News are Bruce Bowen and Marshevet and Destinee Hooker. Janet Holliday will receive an honor that the Sports Foundation nominated her for - the 2005 Hershey Strive Volunteer of the Year award.

What a night! Don’t miss it. Everyone in San Antonio who loves sports comes out for this event. Even better…the event benefits the Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth program, so more boys and girls will have an opportunity to participate if you join us for the gala. Read the article below for more details and order your tickets today.

Jenny Carnes Named SALOC Director

Fresh off her position as director of the local organizing committee for the 2005 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship last month, Jenny Carnes has been named the director for upcoming NCAA basketball events. Beginning with the 2006 NCAA Division I Women’s San Antonio Regional basketball tournament this March (see story below), Jenny will lead the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) that will plan the NCAA events leading up to the 2008 Men’s Final Four.

An employee of the Sports Foundation since 2000, Jenny played basketball at the University of the Incarnate Word and was named to her alma mater’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.

SALOC is comprised of the San Antonio Sports Foundation, the University of Texas at San Antonio and the City of San Antonio. In addition to the women’s regional in March and the 2008 NCAA Final Four, San Antonio will host the 2007 NCAA Men’s Regional basketball tournament and the 2010 Women’s Final Four.

Sports Hall of Fame Boasts Hottest Auction in Town

The silent auction at this year’s Sports Hall of Fame Tribute will be the biggest and best ever and promises great items for everyone’s taste and wallet. Imagine a limousine picking you up and whisking you away to the airport where a private helicopter awaits you and takes you and your guests on a sunset helicopter tour of the city. You land one-hour later at the Dominion Country Club where you and your friends enjoy a five course gourmet meal prepared table side.

Other auction items include a weekend wine lovers extravaganza to Napa Valley; a one-week stay for eight people at a cliffside villa in Manzanillo; a one-week stay for twelve people in South Lake Tahoe; a dinner for 20, courtesy of Chef Michael Bomberg of Spice of Life; a four night trip for two people to the Jaguar Paw Jungle Resort in Belize; Santikos movie passes for one year plus two movie chairs for your home theater; and last but not least, your very own Coca-Cola vending machine. And, of course, we’ll offer the most amazing sports memorabilia items available.

Don’t miss out on the excitement as we honor Class of 2006 inductees Bob Bass, Sean Elliot, Cito Gaston, Thomas Lott, Mary Nan West and Pinkey Whitney! Purchase your tickets or table online or call Gretchen Garceau-Kragh at 210-820-2109 for tickets and more information.

Shrine Game Comes To Alamodome

March Madness® returns to San Antonio!

The regional will determine one of four teams that will advance to the Women’s Final Four® in Boston, MA.

If you want to see great college basketball, tickets can be purchased at the AT&T Center Box Office or through Ticketmaster. More information and tickets are also available by visiting www.NCAASports.com.

UTSA Diploma Dash

The 22nd Annual Diploma Dash, sponsored by the UTSA Alumni Association, is scheduled for Saturday, February 11, 2006 on the UTSA 1604 campus. By mayoral proclamation, this event is designated San Antonio’s annual 5K City Championship Race and 1.5 K Fitness Walk. Local community sponsors and alumni wholeheartedly support this worthwhile event each year, raising scholarship money for both the association and UTSA track and field programs. Last year, over 800 participants and sponsors contributed $24,000. Diploma Dash is the premier event of UTSA Homecoming Week in February.

Early registration is $20 per person before February 8, or $30 on race day. On site registration and check-in begin at 8 am; the race starts at 9 am. Corporate teams of five may register for $250. Forms are available online at www.utsa.edu/alumni, or at local sports stores and sponsors.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Jane F. Burton, director, Alumni Programs, and executive director of the UTSA Alumni Association, at (210) 458-4133.

Fencers Take on International Field

The San Antonio Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth fencing program sent two athletes to Budapest, Hungary to compete in the Coupe Heracles Junior, a world cup tournament held January 6-10. Kristin Howell, ranked 6th nationally in junior women’s epee, in her first international competition, went 5-1 in her pool before losing in her second direct elimination bout. She placed 41 out of 162 fencers.

Community Olympic Development Program (CODP) coach Wendell Kubick called Kristin’s achievement “a fantastic accomplishment.” The Coupe Heracles is an important competition. According to José Sanchez, assistant director of CODP and Dreams for Youth, it is the hardest junior world cup competition of the season. The best of the best compete and fencers must have attained a certain point standing to go.

Steven Kubik, ranked 15th nationally in cadet men’s foil, was also fencing in his first international competition. He did not go to the direct elimination round. San Antonian Mark Kubik, who attends Notre Dame on a fencing scholarship, also traveled to the competition. He placed 119th in junior men’s foil after fencing the eventual 17th place finisher from France who was seeded 11th.

“This trip was very motivational for our kids!” said Wendell. “It showed our kids that they can compete and win at the highest international level with the training and development they have received here in San Antonio. They also learned a lot about international travel and getting around in a different part of the world.”

At the North American Cup tournament in Houston this past weekend, Kristin Howell won bronze in junior women’s epee and placed 12th in Division I women’s epee. Mark Kubik placed 14th in junior men’s epee.

Sign of Good Things to Come

Thanks to the generosity of Walton Signage, and SASF board member Gary Walton, the Dreams for Youth Training Center now has a new sign! This is the final piece to the newly renovated home of our Dreams for Youth and Community Olympic Development fencing program. As Gary points out, an external sign is critical for any business that needs exposure. “It’s the least expensive, most effective way to advertise.”

Now parents, athletes and passing motorists will easily be able to identify the program’s new location at 525 San Pedro. The sign is valued at $6,500. “The Sports Foundation is a worthwhile organization that is important to the city of San Antonio,” adds Gary. “We were glad that we could help out with our expertise.”

Freeman Sets The Stage

The San Antonio Sports Foundation is fortunate to have many good friends in the local corporate community who provide budget-relieving goods and services to our events and programs. One such company, Freeman, recently provided the pipe and drape that helped to make the Valero Go!Kids Challenge Subway Victory Lap Celebration so colorful at the Alamodome on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005.

Freeman is a recognized general services contractor in the tradeshow and exposition industry. The nationwide company’s local San Antonio branch has supported numerous community projects over the last 36 years.

Trisha Frank, general manager at Freeman, says she looks forward to continuing this special relationship with the San Antonio Sports Foundation and is pleased to be able to help inspire and motivate our local youth to adopt healthy lifestyles.
