During the Sports Foundation’s twentieth anniversary celebration, allow me to thank our Board of Directors’ Youth Committee chaired by Ralph Bender, the staff and especially our hard working coaches who are making a difference in the lives of so many young people during the summer months. Several of our programs are growing. More boys and girls are involved in summer training and competitions, for which we are grateful.

One program that has really blossomed this summer is the Dreams for Youth volleyball league. More than 350 girls are practicing their volleyball skills to be ready for their fall middle and high school seasons and club volleyball, which begins in December. In conjunction with the Women’s Sports Foundation (a national organization which advocates for and promotes sports opportunities for girls and women), the Sports Foundation is conducting the GoGirlGo Project™ mentoring sessions during the volleyball league play for a second summer. Before practices on Monday and Wednesday evenings, volleyball participants are attending meaningful group discussions on a wide range of topics that will better prepare them for issues they will face as adults.

Thanks to the Women’s Sports Foundation for having confidence in the Sports Foundation and providing us additional funding to run this program. And kudos to all of the Sports Foundation sponsors that make programs such as the GoGirlGo Project™possible.

Once again Happy 20th Birthday to the entire Sports Foundation family!

Silver Stars Pay Tribute to Olympians & Sports Foundation

San Antonio’s WNBA Silver Stars will host a salute to Olympians and the Sports Foundation at their Saturday, July 31 game against the Los Angeles Sparks. The Stars’ Shannon “Pee Wee” Johnson and the Sparks’ Lisa Leslie will be teammates for USA Basketball at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens. During the game that evening, they will be recognized along with other area Olympians from current and past Games.

The night will also mark the launch of the Sports Foundation’s 20th Anniversary campaign. The Foundation’s three new television ads, featuring Olympic swimmer Josh Davis and San Antonio Spur Devin Brown, will debut during the game. The Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth athletes will provide sport demonstrations before tip-off.

TThe Silver Stars want families to feel very much a part of the evening’s patriotic celebration. They’re offering free admission to any child (ages 14 and under) who wears a team uniform with a paid adult admission. The children can participate in a "Parade of Athletes" across the court at halftime. So dress the kids up in their Little League, YMCA, CYO or other team uniforms and bring them to the SBC Center for an evening of fun and celebration.

New Video Celebrates Anniversary

The Sports Foundation has produced an exciting new video to promote its 20th Anniversary. The video, which was produced in collaboration with Sports Foundation sponsor Maverick Video Productions, features highlights from the Sports Foundation’s successful event history. It also focuses on the Foundation’s innovative youth initiatives including Dreams for Youth, the Community Olympic Development Program and the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™.

The video will be used by Sports Foundation representatives throughout our 20th Anniversary celebration in speeches to local and regional organizations, and in presentations to potential donors and youth groups.

If you’re interested in having a representative of the Sports Foundation address your organization, please contact Mary Ullmann Japhet at 210-820-2123 or mjaphet@sanantoniosports.org.

Busy Summer for Community Olympic Development Program Athletes

DIVING

At the Region 8 Diving Championships at the Woodlands, TX, held June 25-27, Stephanie Giddens placed second in the 14-15 girls platform. Alison Pipitone placed third in the 16-18 girls 1-meter category. Overall, six CODP athletes qualified for the West Zone Championship in Brown Deer, WI slated for July 16-17.

BADMINTON

Fourteen CODP badminton athletes accompanied Coach Kampol Surapiboonchai to Boston for the Jr. National Championships June 29-July 3. Three teams won their consolation rounds, capturing 5th place overall and medalling:

Gilbert Gil and Brandon Juarez (Under 15 Boys Doubles)
Vanessa Diaz and Veronika Gutierrez (Under 17 Girls Doubles)
Christina Leonardson (MA) and Suzanna Rodriguez (Under 22 Girls Doubles)

Additionally, two teams captured 6th place: Crystal Bustamante and Veronika Gutierrez (Under 15 Girls Doubles) and Gilbert Gil and Veronika Gutierrez (Under 15 Mixed Doubles 6th)

Coach Kampol explains that the top eight finishers earn United States National Team points. If there is a competition that needs a player to represent the U.S., the player(s) will be chosen based upon these points. “I am so proud of the athletes,” says Kampol. “We turned many heads of players, coaches, and officials. Our program has caught up and even surpassed many more established programs in the country, and it’s only a matter of time and maturity before something big happens.”

FENCING

In Charlotte, NC the Fencing Summer National Championships were held July 3-11. San Antonio CODP athletes swept the Under-16 Women’s Epee event (out of 82 competitors). Kelley Hurley won gold, her sister Courtney Hurley won silver, and Kristin Howell tied for bronze (with Neely Brandfield-Harvey of Gulfcoast, TX). Kelley Hurley also took first in the Under-19 Women’s Epee, and Courtney Hurley won gold in the Youth-14 Women’s Epee.

The SASF Dreams for Youth Fencing Center won a bronze medal in Open Men's Team Foil. The team was composed of Mark, Steven and Nick Kubik, and Sasha Zucker and was coached by Wendell Kubik.

Three other San Antonio fencers also did well. Oksana Samorodov took the silver medal and Sonali Patel took the bronze medal in the Youth-10 Women’s Epee division. Kael McInnis took a bronze medal in the Youth-10 Men’s Epee division.

CODP Fencing Coach Honored

At the U.S. Fencing Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Dinner, CODP fencing coach Wendell Kubick received an award from the United States Fencing Association for Service to Divisions and Sections. Wendell has been involved with the sport of fencing for 32 of his 45 years. He currently serves as the president of the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA). His contributions to the USFA division and sections include establishing Regional Youth Circuits around the country as chairman of the USFA Youth Committee. These competitions have helped hundreds of youth enjoy and compete in fencing closer to home in their own regions. Wendell is also a member of the USFA Coaches Committee. Over the past four years, Wendell has been a leader in the USFCA’s training and certification program.
