First up is the kickoff on October 1 of our exciting new program, the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™. Our staff and dedicated volunteers are gearing up to support the more than 100,000 children (grades K-5) who are going to be walking one-quarter mile a day. We’re especially grateful to the support of Mayor Ed Garza, the superintendents of the six participating school districts, and our sponsors who will join us for the kickoff press conference on October 1 at 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Elementary. Come join us! Please see the article below for more information.

If that’s not enough fun, stay tuned! The SBC Sports Foundation Golf Classic is slated for Monday, November 10 at the Dominion Country Club. Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge Readies for Launch!

On October 1, more than 100,000 children in the San Antonio area will take their first steps in the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ fueled by Valero. For 19 weeks, children in six participating school districts will be motivated to walk one-quarter mile a day for a total of 26.2 miles. The Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge is the Sports Foundation’s gift to the community – free of charge to the participants and their schools and designed to combat the growing concerns of childhood obesity and inactivity.

“I applaud the Sports Foundation for taking a leadership role in helping the children of our community be healthy and active,” said Dr. Nat Sanderson, who is honorary chairman of the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ as well as a cardiologist and member of the Sports Foundation board of directors. “It is important that children learn early that regular activity and good nutrition will reward them for life.”

The Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ has been embraced wholeheartedly by the Harlandale, North East, Northside, San Antonio, Southside and Southwest Independent School Districts and will be distributed through the physical education teachers at 180 elementary schools. Children will log their mileage in a special Go!Kids journal and will receive incentives from sponsors for their achievements along the way.

Over the next few months, Sidelines will recognize the participants, schools and sponsors who are making the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ a positive force for fitness in San Antonio.

SASF Patronship Pays Off!

The San Antonio Sports Foundation is pleased to announce that renewing donors Ilene and Larry Goldman have won two tickets to “For the Love of Kids & Harleys” gala on Wednesday, October 8 at Far West Rodeo. The Sports Foundation is one of the charities benefiting from the lively gala which features singer George Straight as the guest auctioneer and Robert Earl Keen, Jr. as the evening’s entertainment.

The Goldman’s were selected in a random drawing of other new or renewing Sports Foundation donors in the month of August. “We’re happy to help the Sports Foundation because of all the good that you do. We love sports and especially appreciate what the Sports Foundation does for the youth of our community,” said Ilene Goldman.

“People like the Goldman’s help the Sports Foundation provide programs for thousands of young people every year in San Antonio and bid on and host major economic generators like the NCAA® Final Four®,” said Sports Foundation fundraising chairman Gary Arthur, VP of Marketing at Valero Energy Corporation. “Individual contributions make a big difference to the Sports Foundation.”

USA Pentathlete Ranked #1 in World!

USA Pentathlon has much to be proud of after the performances of its athletes in the last few weeks. The United States can boast that it has the number one ranked men’s pentathlete in the world! Vaho Iagorashvili, who is ranked number one after the recent World Championship, trains in San Antonio, headquarters for USA Pentathlon. So does his wife, Mary Beth Iagorashvili, who is currently the tenth ranked woman pentathlete in the world.

“The USA has never been ranked this high and so deep, especially on the men's side,” said USA Pentathlon executive director Robert Marbut. “We also have a husband and wife who each have a legitimate chance of medalling in Athens.”

Marbut, whose organization recently faced many challenges, including a threat of elimination from the Olympic Games, credits talented athletes, a strong board of directors -- including Sports Foundation board members Ralph Bender and Steve Richards -- and a restructured coaching staff with USA Pentathlon’s dramatic turnaround.

DFY Summer Games

The first annual Dreams for Youth Summer Games were held on a warm weekend in August at four locations around San Antonio. With their parents watching, close to 250 enthusiastic children competed in badminton, gymnastics, fencing and diving. Each child received a t-shirt, certificate, and a ticket to Splashtown. Alma Striker, director of the Dreams for Youth program, was pleased with attendance, and hopes to attract even more participants next year by to moving the games to May. “Having the games at the beginning of the summer will serve as a summer kick-off for the sports, and an end-of-the school-year finale too,” says Striker.

Fall Into a New Sport with Dreams for Youth

As a new school year begins, fall registration is underway for four sports in the Dreams for Youth program.

  • Badminton will be held in five schools in the San Antonio, North East, and Northside Independent School Districts.
  • Fencing classes are being held at the Dreams for Youth Gym, two San Antonio Parks and Recreation centers, Southside ISD and St. Luke’s Episcopal School. The CODP fencing program has a new home and new name. Alamo Fencing Academy is the training site for CODP athletes and is located at West Loop Center, 5415 Bandera Road, Suite 512, just inside Loop 410. Formerly known as the Palo Alto College Fencing Center, the move allows the fencing program to expand and use top-rate facilities.
  • Diving takes place at the Northside Aquatics Center and at San Antonio Natatorium.
  • Gymnastics classes are being held at the Dreams for Youth Gym, two San Antonio Parks and Recreation centers, and in Southside ISD schools.
Fencing and gymnastics classes for children who are home schooled are also underway at the Dreams for Youth Gym. Volleyball begins in October, and swimming will start next spring. For more information, call (210) 820-2113.

CODP Fencer Takes Silver at Pan Am Games

Congratulations to Community Olympic Development Program (CODP) fencer Kelley Hurley who was a silver medallist at the 2003 Pan American Games. Hurley won her medal in the women’s team epee final. The Pan American Games were held in August in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Hurley is a sophomore at Warren High School and trains with USA Pentathlon as part of the San Antonio CODP hosted by the San Antonio Sports Foundation. She is currently ranked third in the nation in women’s epee.

Solomon Smith Barney & Women’s Bar Assoc.

Thanks to the generosity of Solomon Smith Barney (SSB) and the Bexar County Women’s Bar Association, Dreams for Youth athletes are learning lessons well beyond sport. Last month, SSB presented a check for $10,000 to the Sports Foundation for support of the Girls and Life Sports (G.A.L.S.) mentoring program, which is implemented by volunteers with the Bexar County Women’s Bar Association.

Last June, the Women’s Bar Association was awarded a Star of Achievement Award by the State Bar of Texas for its role in this innovative program which presents a mentoring curriculum to girls ages 12-14 in the Harlandale ISD, bolstering healthy decision making, communication and refusal skills. G.A.L.S. is rewarding to both the young women and their volunteer facilitators, and there is hope of expanding it in the near future.
