Time Off for Good Behavior!

The staff appreciates your patience and support during our move to the Alamodome.. This summer we're operating at a somewhat slower pace as we prepare for the upcoming very busy fall and our 20th Anniversary year in 2004. We're gearing up to host another prestigious NCAA® Final Four®, a new youth health initiative, a San Antonio areas sports recognition program and so much more!

Don’t miss a moment of the excitement. If you currently are not an individual or corporate donor, please sign up today! Contact Mary Japhet by e-mail or by phone at 210-820-2123 for more information. You may also click here to download an individual donor form that you can fax or mail in to the Sports Foundation.

There is a special drawing during the month of August for new and renewing donors. Two tickets to join us at the For The Love of Kids & Harleys gala event on October 8th await the lucky winner, who will be announced on September 1st.

For the Love of Kids and Harleys is an event that was started nine years ago by five friends who came together to raise money for local charities while celebrating their passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Since 1995, For the Love of Kids & Harleys has raised more than $1,000,000 for charity. The San Antonio Sports Foundation Dreams for Youth program has been selected as one of the five charities for 2004. Email Vanessa Richey for details on sitting with our team for the event.

Thanks for your support, and remember to sign up as a Sports Foundation donor so you are eligible for the drawing!

Calling All Final Four® Volunteers!

Mary Holland and Sheila Jones are two names you will be hearing a lot about leading up to the 2004 NCAA® Final Four® in April. As volunteer co-chairs, these women will be overseeing the biggest job of the tournament: recruiting and organizing the 2,000 volunteers needed to host this event!

“We have the greatest volunteers in the world, and we are looking forward to working with them as we showcase San Antonio, our beautiful city. Please join us in the fun and volunteer for the 2004 NCAA® Final Four®,” say Holland and Jones.

Why volunteer for the Final Four®? There is something for everyone! Volunteer activities range from fan welcome and arrival, youth clinics, communication, transportation, interactive events and mementos. You will have an opportunity to involve yourself in one of the greatest sporting events in the country; you will meet new and exciting people; you will get to show the NCAA® and all of it’s fans why San Antonio has the very best volunteers. And if that is not enough, the volunteer uniforms will be great!

Here’s what to expect: after filling out and submitting your volunteer application, a confirmation email will be sent to you. A mandatory volunteer orientation will take place March 23 & 24, giving you a choice between attending an afternoon or an evening session. This will give you the opportunity to meet with key volunteers, confirm shifts and assignments and pick up a uniform and handbook. Your last job is simple – show up on time, have fun and be a wonderful ambassador for San Antonio!

Just click here to sign up today! Simply print the form, complete it and mail or fax it to the Sports Foundation.

National Gymnastics Day at Dreams for Youth Gym

National Gymnastics Day will be celebrated at the San Antonio Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth Gymnastics and Fencing Center this Saturday, August 2, from 9 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The center is located at 300 San Pedro and admission is free.

National Gymnastics Day is sponsored by USA Gymnastics to celebrate the sport. It annually attracts participation from more than 1,000 gymnastics clubs nationwide. The Sports Foundation is supporting this national effort by exposing children in San Antonio, especially those from disadvantaged neighborhoods, to the sport of gymnastics.

Activities at the Dreams for Youth gym will include gymnastics demonstrations, a dunking booth, moon bounce, karaoke, cakewalk, and pie toss. There will also be door prizes. For more information, call 210-226-5479.

Harlandale Alumni Critical to DFY Success

The Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth (DFY) program has always had a good relationship with the Harlandale school district. Harlandale has hosted the DFY volleyball league for the last five years and has embraced the opportunities DFY offers its students. But Harlandale has contributed even more than facility and administrative support to DFY.

Today, seven former and three current Harlandale Indians or McCollum Cowboys are DFY coaches, including the director of DFY, Alma Striker. “Harlandale always finds room to let us use their faculties, and many of their coaches volunteer and help us out,” says Striker.

Other Harlandale alumni include Joe Herrera, DFY head volleyball coach and coordinator, Sylvia Cardenas, volleyball coach, and sisters Laura and Christina Cabinella, volleyball coaches. Jose Sanchez, DFY head fencing coach, began as a DFY athlete while a student at Harlandale High School and recruited fellow Harlandale alum Carl Pardel as a fencing coach. John Paul Tristan, Felicia Campos, and Gabriel Alvarez are part-time gymnastics coaches and current students in the Harlandale district.

Thanks to all the Harlandale alumni who give so much of themselves to help the young athletes of Dreams for Youth succeed.

Dreams For Youth/CODP provides training in six Olympic sports including fencing, gymnastics, badminton, swimming, diving and volleyball for thousands of primarily disadvantaged San Antonio children each year. To learn more, contact Alma Striker at 210-820-2113 or astriker@sanantoniosports.org.

our team

Elena Stout is the Sports Foundation's marketing coordinator. A May 2003 graduate of UTSA, Elena is making the transition from college student and manager of the UTSA track team to fulltime employee. She has worked in the marketing department of the Sports Foundation part-time since 2001, so her switch to career woman hasn't been too tough. Recently, she was featured in a make over segment on News 4 WOAI's Living show, which gave her a few pointers on looking the part.

In her own words...

What does your job entail?
I work with the marketing team at the Sports Foundation to create event sponsorship packages that are a win-win for the Sports Foundation and our sponsors. I also support our ongoing corporate and individual donor campaigns.

What do enjoy most about your job?
I love working in sports and the opportunity to learn something new each day from the people I work with.

What's the hardest part of your job?

Getting people to say "yes" when I ask for money and facing rejection. Getting a check in the mail makes my day.

What's been the biggest challenge in your transition from college student to fulltime employee?
Realizing that I'm no longer seen as a student; that my opinions matter, and that I'm expected to voice them. Actually, it's easier being a full-time employee because I can focus my time now. Before I was a full-time student with two part-time jobs!

What's one thing people probably don't know about you?
I'm a first-generation American of Dutch and Lebanese descent.
