Three events in four weeks -- NCAA® Final Four®, Pan American Sports Organization General Assembly, Whataburger® Roundball Ruckus -- what a staff we have! Thanks for your support and understanding during a very busy spring.

So what’s next? This summer expect a very professional look for our 20th Anniversary campaign. We hope that everyone in San Antonio will know more about and appreciate your Sports Foundation. We especially hope they’ll want to donate during the special fundraising campaign chaired by Gary Arthur of Valero that begins August 1st.

Equally important are the plans for the 2004 Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™. We want to get even more boys and girls walking each day. Stay tuned for details about the new components of this program. You will want to get your own healthy-kids cookbook. What a great Christmas present!
Our goal…to have every boy and girl in grades kindergarten thru 5th grade in Bexar County in the program.

World Cup soccer is here! Take time now to mark your calendar for June 19th. The Alamodome will be the site of the qualifying match between Dominica (home team) and Mexico. The Sports Foundation will be looking for ways to secure donated tickets for boys and girls from San Antonio to create a Dominica “fan club.” Watch this site for more details. Get your tickets now! Dallas drew over 45,000 for a match several weeks ago. We CAN out draw Dallas, but only if YOU will put it on your calendar and get your tickets now through Ticketmaster.

From your SASF Board of Directors…thanks for all that you did to make this year’s spring events such a huge success.

What-a-Roundball Ruckus!

The Whataburger Roundball Ruckus at the Alamodome was a great success, despite the rain and wind storm San Antonio endured on May 1. Because of the weather, the Sports Foundation's annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament was scaled down to a one-day, double-elimination event.

A big thank you to the understanding participants who played full force on Sunday, May 2, with some teams playing as many as seven games on their way to age group and division championships. Congratulations to everyone and a special thanks to Whataburger and all of our great sponsors. For tournament results, click here.

Sports Leaders of the Americas Meet in San Antonio

More than 200 individuals from North, Central and South America attended the Pan American Sports Organization General Assembly at the Mariott Plaza San Antonio during the week of April 19. Hosted by the U.S. Olympic Committee in partnership with the Sports Foundation, the delegates conducted official PASO business and enjoyed San Antonio hospitality after hours. San Antonio's annual city-wide celebration, Fiesta, served as a backdrop to the festivities which included a Sports Foundation-hosted River Parade party and another reception and dinner at the Buckhorn Saloon. We thank our volunteers who shared their time, talent and multi-lingual abilities to make this meeting a grand success. We hope all the PASO delegates will return to San Antonio soon!

Sports Foundation Leader Receives PASO Appointment

Dr. Susan Blackwood has been appointed to serve on the PASO Women and Sport Commission. PASO’s Women and Sport Commission is a component of the International Olympic Committee’s Women and Sport Commission.

“Susan will be an excellent contributor to the commission,” said Anita De Frantz, a U.S. Olympian, International Olympic Committee member and Chair of the IOC’s Women and Sport Commission. “She understands sport, frequently volunteers her expertise, and is well known. Her enthusiasm and determination will be a major influence.”

“I am honored to be selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee to serve in this capacity and to represent the San Antonio Sports Foundation internationally,” said Blackwood. “I look forward to continuing my commitment to gender equity in sport and growing more opportunities for women in the Americas.”

CODP Athletes are Winners

Several young San Antonio athletes competing under the banner of the Community Olympic Development Program (CODP), a partnership between the Sports Foundation and U.S. Olympic Committee, have earned honors in their sports.

Stephanie Giddens, an 8th grader at Zachry Middle School, finished second in the 13 and under 5-meter category at the West National 2004 Championships for Junior Olympic Diving. The three-day diving competition was held April 23-25 in San Antonio. Gidden's score was based on seven dives, and she competed against 30 other girls from across the Western United States. She is a former gymnast who took up diving a year ago. Aidan Scribbick placed 11th in the boys 11 & under, 1-meter event. Nathan Schreiber placed 22nd in the boys 16-18, 3-meter event.

CODP fencer Mark Kubik, a junior at Reagan High School, proudly represented the United States and San Antonio in April at the Junior World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Mark, who placed 13th, achieved a 4-1 record in the preliminaries and won his next two direct elimination bouts before meeting the eventual silver medallist from Russia in the sweet sixteen. Mark's performance was particularly impressive considering this was his first appearance at the Junior World Championships.

Kristin Howell finished fifth in women's epee at the Division I National Championship in Atlanta in April. The competition involved 40 athletes. Based on her performance, Kristin earned her "A" rating in fencing. Nick Kubik took the silver medal out of more than 80 fencers in the under-12 boy's foil event.

Steve Kubik won the Southwest Section (Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas) Men's Foil Championship in Oklahoma City, May 1-2, qualifying for the Division 1A Championships in Charlotte, NC this summer.
