My Christmas present was to go to the Sports Foundation Dreams for Youth gym and see the smiling faces of so many boys and girls who benefit from your generosity by being able to participate in our Olympic sports programs. Their increased self esteem, confidence, positive behavior and of course, skill development says it all. Thank you from the nearly 9000 children in our Dreams for Youth and Community Olympic Development Programs and the 85,000 boys and girls who have been exposed to these programs since their inception. If you have not had a chance to make a final gift to the Sports Foundation, don’t miss your few last opportunities to do so before tax-year end. Download a faxable donor form.

My best end of the year wishes to you and your loved ones. We hope that the 2003 will be as full as 2002 with events for San Antonio. It will be hard to top the 2002 Women’s Final Four, the North American Central American and Caribbean track meet, the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Tournament, and the list goes on, but we will anticipate only the biggest and best! The Sports Foundation Board of Directors and staff will be putting your dollars to work!

Happy Holidays,

susan

On Wednesday, December 18, the NCAA named San Antonio as a finalist to host future Men’s and Women’s Final Four basketball championships. Of the cities listed, only San Antonio and St. Louis were named as potential sites for both the men’s and women’s championships.

Cities chosen to compete for the right to host the Men's Final Four in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 include San Antonio, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, New Orleans and St. Louis. San Antonio's competition to host the Women's Final Four in 2008, 2009 and 2010 are St. Louis, Denver, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, San Jose and Tampa. Competing cities will submit official bid documents in early March and will make final presentations to the NCAA in late June at which time the winning cities will be selected.

Charity Ball Supports Dreams for Youth

On December 6, 2002 the Charity Ball Association awarded $24,654 to the San Antonio Sports Foundation Dreams for Youth program. This is the first year that the San Antonio Sports Foundation has received funds from the Charity Ball Association.

Since 1954, the Charity Ball Association has approved contributions of over $6,000,000 to children’s charities in Bexar County. The proceeds of the 2002 Chrysanthemum Ball were awarded to Dreams for Youth and 18 other non-profit organizations that benefit children in Bexar County. These funds will be used to purchase equipment for gymnastics, badminton, volleyball, and fencing, and will allow us to increase the number of children who can participate in Dreams for Youth. The San Antonio Sports Foundation is truly grateful for the support from the Charity Ball Association.

San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute

On Friday, February 7, five deserving individuals will be officially inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame at the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, a black-tie gala and silent auction staged on the floor of the Alamodome. The City of San Antonio, The San Antonio Express-News and the San Antonio Sports Foundation sponsor the Sports Hall of Fame. We continue our profiles of the Class of 2003 with Warren McVea, a football legend in San Antonio.

McVea and fellow inductee, Linus Baer, were the stars of the 1963 Lee vs.. Brackenridge football battle that has been labeled the high school "Game of the Century" by the Dallas Morning News. One of the best high school running backs in Texas history, McVea became the first black to sign an athletic scholarship at the University of Houston. In 1968, McVea entered the NFL draft and was quickly picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals. Just two years later, he won a Super Bowl Championship with the Kansas City Chiefs.

McVea will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame along with fellow football great Linus Baer, Negro Baseball League legend John “Mule” Miles, former San Antonio Spur Johnny Moore and Olympic volleyball player Demetria Sance. Proceeds from the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute benefit Dreams for Youth, a program of the Sports Foundation.
