What a Year!

It does not seem possible that we have already shared another year filled with Sports Foundation activities. Events such as the “Slam dunk” 2002 Women’s Final Four, Sports Hall of Fame, the first Sports Conference of the Americas, a Pan American Games site visit (for which we had five short days to prepare), final Pan American Games bid document and presentation, the NACAC international track meet, Roundball Ruckus, Sports Challenge and WhataKids Challenge at SeaWorld, Golf Classic, and the best ever Big 12 Women’s Soccer Tournament tell the story.

Along with these numerous “feathers in the Foundation hat” stands our new agreement with the hospitality industry and the allocation of additional funding from the city of San Antonio. Your Board of Directors and staff know that these successful events can only be made possible with the financial support that we get from you, the community leaders.

We enter a hectic holiday season hoping to end such an eventful year on a positive financial note as well. Please think of putting the Sports Foundation on your “gift” or year-end donation list with an individual membership or you could donate a membership in the name of someone as his or her holiday gift.

We thank you in advance for your contribution.

Earlier this week, the San Antonio Express-News published two articles about the Sports Foundation’s successes and challenges (links to the articles are provided below). Let’s make it possible to have other positive articles written about the Sports Foundation’s efforts in 2003. Your support can make that happen.

Historic Partnership to Promote San Antonio

The San Antonio Sports Foundation, the Greater San Antonio Hotel/Motel Association (GSHMA) and the Tourism Council are working together to promote sports tourism in San Antonio.

A memorandum of understanding was signed November 15 by Sports Foundation Chairman and SBC Group President Jim Callaway, Sports Foundation Executive Director Dr. Susan Blackwood, President of the GSAHMA Henry Feldman, Vice-President and President-Elect of the GSHMA Mike Sawaya, and Chairman of the Tourism Council Michael Catcott.

“Sports marketing is an integral part of promoting the city of San Antonio to visitors,” said Sawaya. “Aligning ourselves with the Sports Foundation strengthens our industry’s ability to compete for the sports tourism dollar.”

“It’s an advantage to both the Sports Foundation and the tourism industry to combine our efforts to enhance San Antonio’s profile nationally and internationally as a sports destination,” stated Callaway.

The memorandum ensures that the Sports Foundation, the GSHMA and the Tourism Council will have representation on each other’s board of directors. The Sports Foundation will work with the GSHMA and the Tourism Council to identify dates and years during which sporting events would best enhance the hospitality industry. GSHMA and the Tourism Council will rally their membership to promote selected events hosted by the Sports Foundation and encourage member hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and visitor attractions to establish and maintain a corporate membership in the non-profit Sports Foundation.

San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute

On Friday, February 7, five deserving individuals will be officially inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame at the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, a black-tie gala and silent auction staged on the floor of the Alamodome. The City of San Antonio, The San Antonio Express-News and the San Antonio Sports Foundation sponsor the Sports Hall of Fame.

The next few issues of Sidelines will highlight the accomplishments of each of the Class of 2003 inductees, beginning with football standout Linus Baer.

As a star running back, Linus Baer led his Lee High School team to a close victory against Brackenridge High School in 1963 in what the Dallas Morning News labeled the high school football “Game of the Century.” Baer scored 37 points and gained 339 total yards in the 55-48 Lee win which pitted him against fellow San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame inductee Warren McVea. Baer was the captain of the Lee football and basketball teams and an All-State and All-America pick as a senior.

Baer went on to play football at the University of Texas where he was team captain his senior year. He received the UT Sportsmanship Award, the Team Leadership Award and the S.X. Bible Scholarship Award, all in 1967.

Baer will be inducted in the Sports Hall of Fame with his friend and former football adversary NFL football champion Warren McVea, Negro Baseball League legend John “Mule” Miles, former San Antonio Spur Johnny Moore and Olympic volleyball player Demetria Sance. Proceeds from the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute benefit Dreams for Youth, a program of the Sports Foundation.

Davis, a two-time Paralympic gold medallist represents the National Disability Sports Alliance. Johnson, an Olympic fencer earned her position on the board as the president of USA Fencing.
