Our Volunteers Make a Difference

The San Antonio Sports Foundation has many advantages when we bid against other sports commissions and cities to host major amateur athletic events. We have a popular destination city and a hospitality industry that embraces visitors, terrific facilities, supportive public officials and a generous corporate community. However, our ace-in-the-hole is our dedicated and talented corp of volunteers.

In the last week, we hosted a Big 12 Soccer Championship and the San Antonio Sports Foundation Golf Classic – two events that rely heavily on volunteers. And once again, they were enthusiastic and dependable. Sports Foundation volunteers come from all walks of life, all ages and bring a variety of talents that help to insure the success of our events. Some volunteer every week in the Sports Foundation office, others put in a few hours at events, but all are appreciated.

Time and time again, organizations from the NCAA to the US Olympic Committee compliment the Sports Foundation on having found such capable volunteers. We’re just grateful that they find us!

If you have time and talent to spare, we could use your help. Call Nancy Christensen at 820-2191 or just click here to become a valued part of our team.

Nebraska Cornhuskers Win Big 12 Championship

The Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship was a great success November 7,8 and 10 at Blossom Soccer Stadium. The University of Nebraska beat Texas A&M in the finals to earn the championship title and an automatic trip to the NCAA Women’s College Cup next month in Austin as the Big 12 Conference representative.

Congratulations also go to two local youth soccer teams who won the Sports Foundation’s drawing to attend the Women’s College Cup. First place tickets to the Championship were awarded to a team sponsored by Phil Miner, the second place tickets went to the Churchill High School team.

The Sports Foundation will host the Big 12 Soccer Championship again for the seventh year in 2003. It’s not too early to reserve your 20-ticket team package for $89!

Second Annual San Antonio Sports Foundation Golf Classic

The second annual San Antonio Sports Foundation Golf Classic was also a winner. Golfers from across the city teed off in support of the Sports Foundation and its Dreams for Youth program at the Quarry Golf Club on Monday, November 11.

The highlight of the day was 2003 San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame inductee John “Mule” Miles’ hole-in-one! The 80-year-old Negro Baseball League legend made the momentous shot on the eighth hole and won a golf trip to California. He can’t go on February 7th, though. That’s the night he and four other local sports greats will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to all the tournament and raffle prize winners. See you next year!

He chose diving and is now a nationally ranked member of the Sports Foundation's Community Olympic Development Program, a partnership with the US Olympic Committee. Nathan, a 15-year-old Holmes High School student is also a member of the Alamo Area Aquatics travel team and part of their national team. Currently ranked 20th in the nation and climbing, Nathan's goal is to earn an athletic or academic scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. "I'm motivated to be the best I can be," says Nathan. In their own words…

As chairman of the San Antonio Sports Foundation’s individual membership committee, Dan Stewart’s passion for the Dreams for Youth program fuels his drive to enlist new members.

“The reason I joined the Sports Foundation is to help inner city children in individual Olympic sports. The Sports Foundation funds the ongoing coaching and equipment for these kids. Dreams for Youth requires the children to maintain a good GPA and helps to keep them out of trouble after school. The children are given the opportunity to better themselves while being surrounded by positive role models. Many of these role models are Olympic athletes themselves. Dreams for Youth tracks these children and can demonstrate their progress and success.”
