Thanks so much to all of you who got out to vote in support of the nine city and county bond proposals. New youth and athletic facilities for this community will be possible. UTSA will also receive seed funding to build a first class soccer and track facility. We want to work with UTSA in a partnership to bid and secure high profile, if not national, events in both sports. Thanks once again for your support for sports, health and fitness for your community!

The Foundation’s individual patron campaign kicked off on October 15th with more benefits for your support. Levels begin at $50. Click here to check out the new perks. Get your tax deduction before year-end!

Becknell Named Chair-Elect

The San Antonio Sports Foundation board of directors has named George Becknell as chairman-elect for the Sports Foundation. He will succeed Jim Callaway as chairman in 2005. George, an insurance and investment planner, joined the Sports Foundation board of directors in 1993 after serving as a key volunteer during the U. S. Olympic Festival-'93. Since then he has been one of the Sports Foundation's most valuable volunteers and successful fundraisers.

"I'm honored and overwhelmed with the trust that's been placed in me to extend the mission of the Sports Foundation," said George, who currently serves on the Sports Foundation's executive committee and will coordinate the local effort to organize the YES basketball clinics for area youth during the 2004 NCAA® Final Four®. "It is critical that we focus on increasing our fundraising efforts so that we can continue to stregthen our ability to attract major sporting events to San Antonio and to provide opportunities for our youth."

OSU Takes Title in Big 12 Soccer

Congratulations to the OSU Cowgirls who won the Big 12 Soccer Championship last weekend in San Antonio. They defeated Missouri 3-2 in double overtime. A big thanks to the Sports Foundation volunteers who worked diligently through chilly, damp weather to make the tournament a huge success. It's not over yet for the eight teams who competed here. Each of them was chosen to compete in the 22nd NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. Oklahoma State received an automatic bid after winning the Big 12 Soccer Championship. The other seven Big 12 teams in the 64-team field are regular season champion Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M. Go, Big 12!

Golfers Tee Off for DFY

More than 130 golfers enjoyed a great day at the Dominion Country Club Monday during the SBC/San Antonio Sports Foundation Golf Classic. The Cox & Smith team of Sports Foundation board member Matt Parkin, Ramon Molina, Kerry Benedict and Big 12 Assistant Commissioner Dru Hancock won the tournament. The annual event benefits the Sports Foundation and it's Dreams for Youth athletes, many of whom were on hand to distribute prizes. Thank you tournament co-chairs Susan McGee and Fred Kirksey and their committee for their leadership and to all the corporations and individuals who supported the tournament and our young athletes.

The Road to San Antonio® Begins!

Since Midnight Madness® kicked off the 2003-04 college basketball season, Division I Men’s Basketball teams across the country have been practicing hard each and every day with one thing in their sights: a trip to San Antonio, April 3 & 5 for the 2004 Final Four® . Little do they know that while they are sweating in the gym, the NCAA®, San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) staff, committee members and volunteers are hard at work preparing to give four teams of student athletes the experience of a lifetime!

The detailed preparation continued this week when NCAA® staff visited San Antonio for November Mini-Seminars. This two-day session focused on each area of the Final Four®, everything from games management to volunteers. Off-season is over, let the Road to San Antonio® begin!

Ticket and Hospitality Packages are still available. Click here for an order form or call Jenny Carnes at (210) 820-2104 for more details.

Go!Kids Enjoy Healthy Halloween

The Alamo Quarry Market teamed up with the Sports Foundation's Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ on October 31 for a Healthy Halloween. Dr. Nat Sanderson, honorary chair of the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™, and Dreams for Youth fencing coaches Jose Sanchez and Karl Pradel were on hand for the community event that provided a healthy alternative to traditional Halloween fare. Children participated in a one-quarter mile walk to help them reach their goal of 26.2 miles in the on-going Sports Foundation program. They also enjoyed a costume contest and healthy treats from Alamo Quarry merchants. Thanks, Alamo Quarry Market, for including the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge in this fun event!

Diving Coach Loves Show-Offs

If you’re a bit of a show-off, then diving is the sport for you. “We encourage showing off,” says Tommy Law, head diving coach for the Community Olympic Development Program (CODP), a partnership between the Sports Foundation and US Olympic Committee. Describing the sport as “acrobatics with an adrenaline rush,” Tommy’s enthusiasm about diving is contagious. “I love to dive because of the sheer fun of it. But there is also something magical about it. There’s something about controlling what your body does.”

Tommy became interested in diving as a young child after watching Olympians Greg Louganis and Bruce Kimball on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. “It looked so cool, I had to learn it.” He and his brothers flipped on the lawn before moving into the pool-- trying to out-do one another with tricks off the board. While in high school, Tommy held school diving records in one meter and three meter platform.

Today, the John Marshall High School and UTSA graduate helps coach some of the best divers in the city. Tommy has been coaching for the CODP since its inception in 1997. He also has been coaching the Alamo Area Aquatics team since 1995 and high school diving for Northside Independent School District since 1996. His goal is to coach a national champion, as well as develop and produce a team of divers that final in the Jr. Olympic National Championships.

For more information on the Dreams for Youth or CODP diving program, call (210) 820-2113.
