Early voting has started! There is a prediction that only about 5% of the voters will get out to vote on the nine city and county bond proposals. Knowing this, you and your family and friends can help make new youth and athletic facilities possible for this community. Remember this is without any tax increase! UTSA will also receive seed funding to build a first class soccer and track facility enabling SASF to bid and secure high profile, if not national, events in both sports. Click here for details.

We want to thank Gary Arthur and his Sports Foundation fundraising committee. Thanks to their efforts, an individual patron campaign kicked off on October 15th. The good news…better and more benefits for your patron support. We have made it easier and given you even more reasons to be a part of the Sports Foundation team! Thanks to those of you who have backed us in the past. We appreciate all of our current supporters and hopefully we can depend on you to help us to secure new patrons. Levels begin at $50. Click here to check out the new patronship benefits. Get your tax deduction before year-end!

SA Sports Hall of Fame Names 10th Anniversary Class

Last week the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2004 was announced during a press conference at the Alamodome. The new inductees are basketball legend David Robinson, baseball greats Gary Bell, Joel Horlen and Robert Zamora and women's golf pioneer Betty Dodd. Each will be officially inducted during the 10th Anniversary celebration of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute on Thursday, February 12, 2004, at the Alamodome. Tables are going fast, so reserve yours today by contacting Vanessa Richey at 210-820-2112 or vrichey@sanantoniosports.org.

David Robinson, recently retired from the San Antonio Spurs, is the only male basketball player in U.S. history to appear in three different Olympic Games (Atlanta, 1996; Barcelona, 1992; Seoul, 1988), winning two gold medals. Robinson is the United States’ all-time leader in Olympic history in career points (270), rebounds (124), and blocked shots (34).

Gary Bell pitched for three Major League All-Star teams, 1960, 1966, and 1968, and led the American League in 1962 with nine relief victories. Bell was a member of the Boston Red Sox in the 1967 World Series. Fellow inductee Joel Horlen is the only baseball player to have won a Pony League World Series, a College World Series, and a professional World Series. He is the only San Antonian to ever pitch a no-hitter in the major leagues. A 1961 graduate of South San High School, Robert Zamora played on sports teams that won three state baseball titles and one state basketball crown. After graduating from Baylor, Zamora returned to coach baseball at his Alma Mater. During his tenure, South San won eight straight district titles, four city championships, and had two state-tournament appearances (’75 and ’76).

Betty Dodd was the first San Antonian to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour, joining the tour in just its second year of operation. Dodd claimed the San Antonio Women’s City Championship from 1941 to 1951, the Oak Hills Club Championship in 1951, and the Brackenridge Club Championship in 1950-51. She died July 8, 1993.

The San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute & Silent Auction is sponsored by the San Antonio Sports Foundation, the City of San Antonio, and the San Antonio Express-News. Proceeds from the black-tie gala benefit the Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth program, which provides training in six Olympic sports for more than 4,000 disadvantaged children each year.

Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ Is On the Move

More than 100,000 children all over San Antonio are logging daily walks as part of the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™, the Sports Foundation's 19-week walking program designed to motivate children to develop the healthy habit of regular exercise. One grateful father, Brian Messer, emailed this message to us: "I think what you're doing is great! My daughter is out running every day now! Thanks Go!Kids!!!"

There are special events for Go!Kids almost every week. This Saturday, UTSA invites all participants to walk their track at 1:30 p.m., and then they and an adult will each receive a FREE ticket to attend the 2 p.m. Lady Roadrunner Volleyball game. On Friday, October 31, Go!Kids can enjoy a Healthy Halloween at the Alamo Quarry Market from 5-8 p.m. There will be a walk, plus healthy treats and prizes. Visit the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids™ website for complete information.

Donohoe Moves to Women's Basketball Championships

There is a bittersweet transition taking place at NCAA headquarters that hits home in San Antonio. Sue Donohoe of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Staff, an individual we have all worked with very closely and grown with professionally, has been given a chance to get back to her roots in women’s basketball. Effective November 1, Sue will step into her new role as the Vice President of Division I Women’s Basketball Championships. Congratulations, Sue, for this much deserved opportunity! SALOC will greatly miss Sue’s leadership during the next five months of Final Four preparation, but 2010 isn’t too far over the horizon, and we look forward to being on her team once again!

The NCAA is working hard to fill Sue’s shoes, and we hope to meet the newest member of their staff on their next visit to San Antonio in December.

DFY Badminton Coach Nets Champions

Imagine a shuttlecock zooming over the net at 200 mph, and you have less than a second to react. Or you notice that a jump smash is equivalent to dunking a basketball. Then you’ll see how badminton appeals to the kids in three local school districts. In five years the Dreams for Youth badminton program has gone from zero to 700 participants, and it continues to grow. When head coach Kampol Surapiboonchai first started the program, the children called it, “batman”. Now, they can say it correctly and play it.

Kampol Surapiboonchai is a three-time United States Olympic Festival athlete, who won a gold medal in 1994. The two-time former national team player came to San Antonio from Southern California in 1997. From 1988-1995 while in Chicago, he had established himself as one of the top developmental coaches in the country. He placed six athletes in the United States Olympic Committee’s residence training program, and had Illinois state champions eight consecutive years. After moving to San Antonio, Kampol’s athletes received three more national titles in only three years--bringing his total championships to 11. The United States Olympic Committee named him “Developmental Coach of the Year” in 1998 and 2002.

Kampol’s goal is to send a homegrown, inner-city athlete to the Olympics, and to achieve a national reputation so that parents will send their kids to San Antonio because it has the “elite” badminton program in the country. San Antonio currently has the nation's only institutionalized elementary school badminton league.

In His Own Words...

"The Sports Foundation and its volunteers serve the community by attracting major marquee sporting events such as the Final Four and Big 12 Soccer Championship which provide significant social and economic benefit to the greater San Antonio area. Its "Dreams for Youth" program offers hundreds of our young people exposure to Olympic-style sports training and competition that they would otherwise never have the opportunity to participate in. Its Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge is an exciting new initiative that inspires young people to make regular activity a part of their daily lives.

Supporting the Foundation, through individual or corporate contributions, is key to keeping San Antonio competitive in attracting big time events and enhancing the Sports Foundation's youth programs to reach more children in its effort to develop their skill level, competitive spirit and self confidence."
