Four hundred elementary students, the Mayor, six superintendents, principals, physical education teachers, sponsors, Sports Foundation board members…the list was endless. That was how October 1st started with the official kick off of the 2003 Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ fueled by Valero at Woodlawn Elementary. The only thing that can top that is waking up on February 14, the culmination of the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™, and knowing that 100,000 boys and girls finished their 26 miles. That totals 2.6 million miles! Now that has to be a record of some kind. Most importantly, that would illustrate many young people developing a routine habit of exercise. What a Valentines Day present! If you want to walk with and encourage some of the participants, please email vrichey@sanantoniosports.org for an assignment.

The Big 12 Conference has announced that the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Tournament will return to San Antonio through 2006. That will mean the Sports Foundation will have hosted this tournament for ten years! Support this year’s tournament. See the ticket order and team order packet information below. Show the Big 12 that they have put their trust in a community that “embraces” their events.

Do your part to get new youth and athletic facilities for this community without a tax increase! Vote early in the city and county bond election. Details about the PEOPLE’S NINE are below. Besides youth fields and courts, UTSA will receive seed funding to build a first class soccer and track facility enabling the Sports Foundation to bid and secure high profile events in both sports. Take the anxiety out of Nov 4th…vote early!!!!

Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ Is On the Move

On Wednesday, October 1, more than 100,000 children in 180 elementary schools and six area school districts took their first steps in the Sports Foundation's Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™. Schools celebrated their kick off creatively with pep rallies and visits from high school bands, cheerleaders, football teams, plus teachers and parents.

Mayor Ed Garza
got the children cheering at his former school, Woodlawn Elementary, as he encouraged them to walk one-quarter mile a day during the 19-week program. He applauded the Sports Foundation and the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ sponsors for initiating the program to fight obesity in San Antonio by motivating kids to make routine activity a healthy habit. Mayor Garza and the Woodlawn students were joined in their walk by Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ honorary chairman Dr. Nat Sanderson, Greg King, president of title sponsor Valero Energy Corp./Diamond Shamrock and many other sponsors, elected officials and community leaders.

Keep up with the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ by logging on regularly to www.sanantoniosports.org/gokids for information about Go!Kids incentive rewards, special events and classroom ideas.

Get Out the Vote

The Sports Foundation urges San Antonio and Bexar County voters to support the PEOPLE's NINE on November 4. The $214 million dollar city and county improvement package does not require a tax increase and includes a plan to improve area parks and recreation facilities, including youth athletic fields, stadiums and gymnasiums. More than $33 million dollars would be allocated to facilities in the San Antonio area if the PEOPLE'S NINE bond issue is passed. Early voting for the bond election takes place from October 18-31.

State Funding Enhances Dreams for Youth

The Dreams for Youth program has received two grants totaling $149,613 from the Office of the Governor Criminal Justice division. The funds are used to support after- school programs in fencing and gymnastics at Southside ISD and two San Antonio Parks and Recreation centers.

This is the second year of the grants, which have served more than 1,000 children ages 5-17. The programs at Southside ISD and the City of San Antonio’s Parks and Recreation Miller’s Pond and Meadow Cliff sites focus on teaching fundamental skills, building self-esteem, developing leadership and self confidence, and reducing at-risk behaviors such as criminal mischief, substance abuse and teen pregnancy. The grants also provide funds for mentoring, tutoring, and transportation for participating students.

“These grants help the Sports Foundation fulfill its mission of serving underprivileged youth by providing constructive, athletic experiences,” says Alma Striker, director of Dreams for Youth.
