Kudos to Mayor Garza, the City Council and the hard working City of San Antonio staff for final adoption of the 2003-4 budget. We sincerely appreciate the Mayor and Council members who voiced their support for full funding their previous commitment to the Sports Foundation. Our efforts to make San Antonio a sports center that generates millions of dollars of economic impact through bidding and hosting of major sporting events have once again been recognized as a solid return on the City of San Antonio’s investment.

We are also grateful to the University of Texas at San Antonio and the other organizations that serve the vital role as “hosts” for these athletic endeavors. Recognition is also deserved for the City of San Antonio departments and staff, including the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Alamodome, the Convention Center, the Police Department, Parks and Recreation and many, many more hard working and well-meaning individuals. We all work together to make these events more successful than anywhere else.

Please also allow me to take this opportunity to thank all the groups and individuals who worked behind the scenes to help us with this ongoing funding effort. The Board of Directors, under the leadership of Jim Callaway, continues to provide the ongoing civic leadership to make this funding a reality.

Speaking of another way to strengthen San Antonio…please get out to vote and pass People’s Nine! This is the $214 million bond campaign for the future of our community. This means more parks, recreation sites, soccer fields, libraries in addition to road, bridge and drainage improvements, an emergency operations center, public health and safety enhancements and much more. What is even better…the county and city are working together to maximize the dollars. Vote early and vote “yes”!

Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge Readies for October 1 Launch!

The Sports Foundation is getting ready for it's biggest community initiative ever! On October 1, more than 100,000 elementary students at 180 local elementary schools will kick off the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ by walking their first quarter mile of the 19-week activity program. Designed to combat childhood obesity and inactivity, the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge will motivate children to walk a marathon distance of 26.2 miles by February 14, 2004.

At Woodlawn Elementary, the school he once attended, Mayor Ed Garza will lead children in walking their first one-quarter mile on October 1 at 10 a.m. He will be joined by the superintendents of the six participating school districts as well as Go!Kids sponsors and various elected officials. In it's inaugural year, the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge school districts include Harlandale, North East, Northside, San Antonio, Southside, and Southwest Independent School Districts.

The Sports Foundation is particularly proud of the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ website at www.sanantoniosports.org/gokids. Designed by Sports Foundation creative director Ross Davis with graphic elements supplied by the talented folks at Creative Link studios, the Go!Kids website is a terrific resource for children, parents and teachers. Check it out for Go!Kids news, updates and special events.

People's Nine Bond Election Benefits Athletic Facilities

The Sports Foundation urges San Antonio and Bexar County voters to support the "People's Nine" on November 4. The $214 million dollar city and county improvement package does not require a tax increase and includes a plan to improve area parks and recreation facilities, including youth athletic fields, stadiums and gymnasiums. Over $33 million dollars alone would be allocated to facilities in the San Antonio area if the PEOPLE’S NINE bond issue is passed.

"The recreation and sports components of the "People's Nine" are critical first steps by the City and County in investing in the health and fitness of our community and especially the long-term health and fitness of our children," said Sports Foundation board member George Block, who worked on the Sports Foundation's behalf to identify needed improvements in area athletic facilities.

Early voting for the bond election takes place from October 18-31. Vote YES for the PEOPLE's NINE!

NCAA Prep Local Officials for Final Four

NCAA® Division I Men’s Basketball representatives were in San Antonio last week as they hosted the 2004 Final Four® Host Manual Seminar in the Alamodome. In an intensive session, NCAA® staff led the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) through the details associated with staging the 2004 NCAA® Final Four®, slated for April 2-5, 2004 in the Alamodome. The NCAA® will be attending monthly SALOC meetings through the 2004 NCAA® Final Four®.

For the Love of Kids & Harleys Revs Up

The founders of For the Love of Kids and Harleys revved up support for their great gala event at a press conference last week. The San Antonio Sports Foundation's Dreams for Youth (DFY) program is one of the five charities that will benefit from the lively party scheduled for Wednesday, October 8 at Far West Rodeo. The press conference featured children from Dreams for Youth, Any Baby Can, Respite Care, Easter Seals and Ronald McDonald House who painted pictures of Harley Davidson motorcycles that will be framed and offered as items for bid in the gala's spectacular silent auction. One of the founders of the group, John Peveto, told DFY fencer Alex Valdez that he was ready to offer the first bid on Alex's painting! George Strait will be the guest auctioneer of three spectacular Harley Davidson motorcycles and musician Robert Earl Keen will entertain the crowd at For the Love of Kids and Harleys. For ticket information, click here or contact Vanessa Richey at 820-2112.

As mentioned above, many of the NCAA® staff and Division I Men’s Basketball Committee were in attendance last week for the monthly San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) board meeting, staff outings and Host Manual Seminar.

While much serious business was accomplished, there was also time for fun and team building. Staff and committee members participated in the inaugural "Jernstedt Cup", named after Tom Jernstedt, Senior Vice President of Division I Men’s Basketball. The competition was fierce on the racetracks of Malibu Castle Golf & Games as participants vied for bragging rights during this team-building event. The following day consisted of a golf scramble at the beautiful Hyatt Hill Country Resort and dinner on the Riverwalk to round out the evening. Thanks again to the NCAA for hosting SALOC in a productive and fun-filled week, and as always, for the first-class leadership and direction that your staff provides!

Dreams for Youth Great Resource for Home-Schoolers

Today, Kyle Kodrowsky is a happy, energetic 11-year old who is home-schooled and fences twice a week at the Dreams for Youth gym. Nine months ago, Kyle was a discipline problem at school, was acting out at home, and had very low self-esteem. His mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer and his fears and frustrations were getting the best of him. According to Kyle’s mom, Maribeth, fencing helped turn him around.

Maribeth pulled Kyle out of public school. At the same time, a friend told her the San Antonio Sports Foundation offered fencing and gymnastics classes for home-schooled children. “This was the perfect place for Kyle to release his frustrations,” says Meribeth. “It’s also taught him self-discipline. He’s a totally different child now.”

Almost 30 home-schooled children fence at the Dreams for Youth gym twice a week. Many of their siblings take gymnastics, and the mothers couldn’t be happier. “Fencing has helped my son learn coordination, and it has given him control of his body,” says Jewel Hoffmann, who has been home-schooling her children for 5 ½ years. Her daughter loves tumbling, and Jewel says this is one of the few programs she finds affordable so that both her children can participate.

DFY Sport Demos Spark Dreams

Five-hundred students at Freedom Elementary were among almost 3,000 elementary and middle school children who have seen fencing and gymnastics demonstrations at schools in the Southside and Harlandale districts this fall. A picture (or demonstration in this case) is worth a 1,000 words, and DFY coaches believe that showing how much fun fencing and gymnastics can be is the best way to hook a child. The Sports Foundation offers after-school programs in badminton, gymnastics and fencing for children in these and other school districts that are located in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

To schedule a Dreams for Youth demonstration at your school, contact Alma Striker at (210) 820-2113.
