Bravo SALOC!

We owe a great tribute to the members of the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) for bringing the 2008 NCAA® Final Four® and the 2010 NCAA® Women's Final Four® to San Antonio. The San Antonio Local Organizing Committee is comprised of representatives of the Sports Foundation, City of San Antonio and The University of Texas at San Antonio. Because we have secured two of the nation's most prestigious sporting events, our dedicated staff and volunteers have made it possible to position San Antonio in front of more than 200 countries and millions of television viewers. And we welcome the thousands of fans who will visit our city once again.

SALOC put our best foot forward with our bid documents, video, site visit and final presentation to the NCAA® Basketball Committees and top level NCAA® staff. More importantly, the success of past NCAA® basketball events in San Antonio seemed to be a critical factor in the decision to pick San Antonio over other excellent, competitive cities. This win adds to the many events that could never have been “landed” without the Alamodome. The foresight to build and now continue the maintenance of the Alamodome will be a key to many sports ventures in the future.

Thanks to all members and supporters of SALOC. We all comprise a unified team demonstrating our commitment to work together with limited resources to make major events happen in San Antonio.

Once again, San Antonio proves that our people are our greatest resource.

Before we start dreaming about 2008 & 2010, our attention will be focused on making the 2004 Final Four® the best ever!

San Antonio Scores Future Final Fours

San Antonio loves basketball and apparently, basketball loves us! Just a couple of weeks after celebrating our San Antonio Spurs winning the NBA Championship, our community has landed not one, but two future NCAA® Final Four® championships.

Yesterday, the NCAA® named San Antonio as the site for the 2008 Men's Final Four® and the 2010 Women's Final Four®. Both events will be hosted by the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee at the Alamodome. The University of Texas at San Antonio is the NCAA Division I host institution.

"I believe San Antonio's success is due in large part to the unity of our SALOC team. UTSA, the City and the Sports Foundation work as one unit when we bid for these major NCAA® events," said Dr. Susan Blackwood, executive director of the San Antonio Sports Foundation. "We're happy the NCAA® has confidence that SALOC will work together to host spectacular Final Four® championships."

SALOC celebrated the announcement at a press conference yesterday at the Alamodome. Mayor Ed Garza praised the SALOC team for its accomplishments and emphasized the City's pride in the Alamodome, one of the nation's premier domed facilities. Also addressing the media were Lynn Hickey, UTSA Athletic Director; Jim Callaway, chair, SA Sports Foundation; Pat Frost, chair, SALOC 2004 NCAA® Final Four®; Cyndi Taylor Krier, chair, SALOC 2002 NCAA® Women's Final Four® and University of Texas Regent; and Mike Abington, Director of the Alamodome.

While excitement is running high after being awarded the 2008 and 2010 championships, SALOC's immediate efforts are focused on hosting the 2004 NCAA® Final Four®.

Badminton Player Nets Jr. National Team Slot

Thirteen Dreams for Youth badminton players participated in the United States Junior Badminton Nationals in Shreveport, LA, June 24-29. They traveled with Coach Kampol Surapiboonchi and competed against hundreds of athletes from around the nation. Four girls medalled, including Maria Davila who placed second in Under 11 Girls Doubles (with Sydney Race (IN)), 4th in Under 11 Girls Singles, and 4th in Under 11 Mixed Doubles (with Erwin Pang (N. CA)). As a result of her play, Davila was selected to the USA Junior Badminton National Team. Crystal Bustamante and Veronika Gutierrez placed 4th in Under 15 Girls Doubles, and Vanessa Diaz and Veronika Gutierrez placed 5th in Under 17 Girls Doubles.

San Antonio has the only organized elementary school badminton league in the country. The Dreams for Youth league began in 1999 as a pilot program in four schools. Today three school districts and 19 elementary campuses participate. Athletes practice twice a week and must have passing grades, good attendance, no discipline problems and be drug free.

CODP winners included Kristin Howell, who placed 1st in the Girls Youth 14 Foil event. Steve Kubik placed 1st overall in the Open Youth 14 Epee competition. Other notable CODP athletes from the Palo Alto Fencing Club were Kimberly Howell, 6th in the Open Youth 10 Mixed Foil and 8th in the Open Youth 12 Mixed Epee; Elizabeth Cox, 5th in the Open Youth 14 Mixed Epee; and Nick Kubik, 6th in the Open Youth 12 Mixed Epee.

Local Fencers Compete in National Tournament

Twenty-five Dreams for Youth (DFY) and Community Olympic Development Program (CODP) athletes are competing in the United States National Fencing Championship June 28-July 6 in Austin, TX. It is the largest fencing event in the world.

“It is the ultimate test of your skills in the U.S.,” says Vinnie Bradford, director and head coach of the CODP fencing program. “You’re competing against the best.” Fencing has been described as physical chess, and is a rigorous sport, mentally and physically.

The athletes are traveling with Coaches Jose Sanchez and Andrei Samorodov. The 19 fencers in the CODP are earning points towards an international team. Through DFY, talented individuals from primarily disadvantaged neighborhoods develop their abilities before reaching the CODP qualification standards.
