San Antonio Hosts NCAA® Committee

Another time that our nerves are a little on edge! San Antonio is bidding for the 2008-11 cycle of NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Fours against other incredible cities. We have just concluded the site visit conducted by the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Committee and staff. Thanks to all of our partners including UTSA, the City of San Antonio, the Alamodome, Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the many hotels that assisted us during the whirlwind tour! We also appreciate the support from our business community for our small informal breakfast during the visit. The Dreams for Youth participants hand delivered their own “welcome back” cards to the members of the site tour -- another indication of the confidence and self-esteem we are building in these young people as they participate in these endeavors. The Committee could not stop talking about the cards and the kids!

Off to the next round of presentations on June 26th!

Northwoods Ice Center Opening

While the competition was heating up for the Spurs in the NBA Finals, things were cooling off at the grand opening of the Northwoods Ice Center last Friday, June 6. Located at 17530 Henderson Pass (behind the Regal Cinema), the Northwoods Ice Center features two regulation ice sheets for figure skaters and hockey players.

Owned by a limited partnership and managed by Spurs Sports & Entertainment, the facility provides practice ice for the San Antonio Rampage. It is a popular location for youth and adult amateur hockey teams, as well as figure and recreational skaters. The facility also sports a fully stocked pro shop, a sports lounge with "adult" beverages and big-screen TVs, a state-of-the-art arcade and private rooms for birthday parties and other celebrations.

San Antonio Sports Foundation Executive Director Dr. Susan Blackwood was invited to join Mayor Ed Garza, Spurs Sports and Entertainment owner Peter Holt, Bruce Barshop, emcee Sonny Melendrez, the Rampage mascot and a representative of both the youth figure skating and hockey programs in the official ribbon cutting to mark the grand opening.

"This facility will bolster the Sports Foundation's ice strategy," said Blackwood. "We're working hard to bring more amateur figure skating and ice hockey competitions to San Antonio, and Northwoods Ice Center is a key component of that strategy. Plus, it's a wonderful facility for the general public and offers a great opportunity to expose our children to the thrill of ice sports."

For information on skating and youth hockey call the Northwoods Ice Center at (210) 490-9550.

San Antonio Works to Secure Future Final Four® Events

While preparations are in full swing as San Antonio readies to host the 2004 NCAA® Men's Final Four® next April, the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) is working to secure future Final Four® championships for the Alamo City. This week, the NCAA® Division I Men's Basketball Committee conducted a site visit in San Antonio as it considers awarding a future NCAA® Final Four® to our city. Five members of the committee and several NCAA® staff members toured the Alamodome, the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and hotels. SALOC, which is a partnership between the Sports Foundation, UTSA and the City of San Antonio, is bidding to host a Men's Final Four® tournament in 2008, 2010 or 2011. San Antonio's competitors in this bid cycle are Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, New Orleans and St. Louis.

"We're optimistic about our bid, but realize we're competing with several top-notch cities and facilities that also have a history with the NCAA®," said SALOC chairman Pat Frost. "Our final presentation to the committee on June 26 will be critical."

San Antonio is also vying with St. Louis, Denver, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, San Jose and Tampa to host the NCAA® Women’s Final Four® in 2008, 2009 and 2010. SALOC representatives will make final presentations to both the NCAA® Men's and Women's Division I Basketball Committees on June 26 in New Mexico. The NCAA® expects to announce selected cities on Monday, June 30.

CODP Fencers Take Titles

Talented fencers from across three states were at Palo Alto College Gymnasium the weekend of May 31-June 1, competing in the United States Fencing Association's (USFA) Regional Youth Circuit. The San Antonio Sports Foundation's Dreams For Youth and Community Olympic Development Programs (CODP) sponsored many of the Palo Alto College Fencing Club athletes.

Wendell Kubik, chairman of the USFA's Youth Development Committee, says having access and funds to good coaching is critical. "Fencing is fairly complex and having good coaching at an early age is crucial to the rest of an athlete's fencing career."
Dreams for Youth provides that training for thousands of primarily disadvantaged youth in San Antonio every year, and gifted athletes may advance to the CODP, which offers elevated training and competition opportunities.

CODP winners included Kristin Howell, who placed 1st in the Girls Youth 14 Foil event. Steve Kubik placed 1st overall in the Open Youth 14 Epee competition. Other notable CODP athletes from the Palo Alto Fencing Club were Kimberly Howell, 6th in the Open Youth 10 Mixed Foil and 8th in the Open Youth 12 Mixed Epee; Elizabeth Cox, 5th in the Open Youth 14 Mixed Epee; and Nick Kubik, 6th in the Open Youth 12 Mixed Epee.

Set, Spike, Win!

On Monday and Wednesday evenings this summer, four gyms in San Antonio reverberate with the sounds of more than 500 high school and middle school girls competing in volleyball leagues in the Harlandale and Southside school districts. In its 15th year, the summer volleyball leagues are sponsored by the San Antonio Sports Foundation's Dreams For Youth program along with the Women's Sports Foundation. The leagues provide the girls a place to work on their skills, practice teamwork, and a place to play competitively.

"It gives these girls something to do," says Sylvia Cardenas, who organizes the leagues. "Many of them can't afford camp or club volleyball, so this provides a positive outlet."

More than 20 schools are involved, and all coaches volunteer their time. Participants are given information on positive role models in women's sports and are encouraged to write in a journal. Dreams For Youth also brings local health experts to talk to the girls about sports injuries, nutrition and personal hygiene.

Dreams For Youth/CODP provides training in six Olympic sports including fencing, gymnastics, badminton, swimming, diving and volleyball for thousands of primarily disadvantaged San Antonio children each year. To learn more, contact Alma Striker at 210-820-2113 or astriker@sanantoniosports.org.
