Fit Kids are the Focus

It’s Fiesta time in San Antonio! While you may be delighting in the delicious, but less-than-healthy goodies Fiesta fans love, the Sports Foundation is working on a project that is designed to motivate our young citizens to embrace a fit, healthy lifestyle from an early age.

The Fit Kids Challenge will begin this fall. Six area school districts will partner with the San Antonio Sports Foundation to encourage boys and girls, grades K thru 5, to make walking a regular, enjoyable part of their daily routine. The children will walk a marathon distance over a 16-week program and track their progress.

More than 100,000 children in the San Antonio ISD, Northeast ISD, North Side ISD, Southwest ISD, South San ISD and Harlandale ISD will kick off the program with the Sports Foundation in October. Key sponsors have already “stepped up” to support the Fit Kids Challenge.

It is not too late! There are many Fit Kids Challenge sponsorship opportunities for corporations who want to help make San Antonio a more healthful community. Proceeds will help underwrite the costs of a training log for each boy and girl, which will include nutritional hints, incentives for reaching mile markers on a periodic basis, partner locations for walking beyond schools and neighborhoods, and even ways to involve Mom and Dad. Also, each deserving child will receive a medal for completion of the “marathon” distance, and a tee shirt for participation in the citywide celebration at the Alamodome in the spring.

You’ll hear more and more about the Fit Kids Challenge in months to come. Please contact me at 210-820-2110 or sblackwood@sanantoniosports.org if you’d like to help us encourage healthy habits for the children of our community.

Governor Perry Meets with Sports Foundation Representatives

At the invitation of Texas Governor Rick Perry, Sports Foundation chairman Jim Callaway and executive director Susan Blackwood met with him in his office at the State Capitol earlier this month. Accompanied by lobbyist Chris Shields, Callaway and Blackwood visited with the Governor about future plans for San Antonio to bid on high profile sporting events. They also asked the Governor for his support to develop a Texas state sports commission. The commission would oversee a statewide strategy for enticing sporting events and organizations to Texas, as well as support the Governor's fitness council initiatives. On behalf of the Sports Foundation, Callaway and Blackwood also presented a token of appreciation to the Governor for his efforts to bring the Pan American Games to San Antonio.

SALOC Visits New Orleans

March Madness® wasn't over for LOC members this year until April! Four days after San Antonio's very successful Regional Championship, a delegation comprised of 25 individuals flew to New Orleans to represent the 2004 NCAA® Final Four® host committee.

Besides attending future hosts meetings and touring the New Orleans Superdome, delegates went to everything from the Championship games themselves to NCAA ancillary events and local fanfare. Hoop City, the NABC Exhibition and National Convention, the Salute Presentation, and Youth Education through Sports Clinics are just a few of the functions that the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) attended.

It was a wonderful experience for new committee members and veterans alike to see first-hand what went on behind the scenes at this year's Final Four®. SALOC took plenty of great notes in New Orleans and looks forward to delivering another fabulous Final Four® in '04!!

Good Luck at Nationals!

Two divers from the Sports Foundation's Community Olympic Development Program are set to make a splash at the West National Championships in Pasadena, California this weekend, April 25 and 26. John Lynch, a senior at Holmes High School, and Nathan Schreiber, a Holmes High School sophomore, both train with the Alamo Area Aquatics diving team. John is competing in the 1 meter and 3 meter events. He is scheduled to attend the University of Wyoming next year on a four-year athletic scholarship for diving. Nathan is also slated for the 3-meter competition.

Both young men attribute their good grades to diving and to their coaches. "The coaches are great! They are patient, and they want you to succeed. They took me from nothing and made me into a collegiate athlete," said John.

Dreams for Youth/CODP diving coach Tommy Law invites any interested youngsters to consider diving, "You do not have to be athletic or talented to be in our program. We will find ways to help you achieve your goals. There is a place for everyone in the program, and we will find the best fit for you," says Coach Law.
