Sidelines - April 23, 2004

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We are still thinking in FOUR’s. There are thousands of people to thank, but first and foremost, thanks to the more than 1200 volunteers who gave their all to make this our best Final Four ever!

Also allow me on behalf of the organization to thank the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) and Sports Foundation staffs. We have a great team, and I am proud of how they worked together under Wendy McCauley’s leadership. Also, hats off to Wendy’s co-leaders, Scott Street and Jim Mery. UTSA and the City of San Antonio deserve much credit for doing such an incredible job with many, many details plus game and building management responsibilities.

The pictures below tell the story, but no one could tell the real story…the corporations and individuals in San Antonio that financially have made this event possible. Even though the NCAA does not permit SALOC or the Foundation to make any money on the event, no one can discount the $50 million dollars of economic impact the Final Four delivers for the community. And it’s impossible to measure the media attention that showed off San Antonio at its best!

Thanks to everyone for pulling together, showing our civic pride, and doing what is so good for San Antonio!

A Fabulous Final Four®!

The 2004 NCAA® Final Four® was a huge success! The San Antonio Sports Foundation is proud to have partnered with UTSA, the City of San Antonio and the NCAA to make this one of the best Final Four tournaments ever.

Everywhere you turned, 50,000 college hoops fans were celebrating their teams, enjoying San Antonio’s beautiful River Walk and generally having the time of their lives in our city.

The Final Four “look” decorated everything from the airport to the Alamodome.

The River Rally gave a uniquely San Antonio flair to the event.

Local and visiting children were able to enjoy the many Final Four events designed just for them.

Passes to pre-game parties were the hot item.

And at least a couple of prominent folks think San Antonio is the perfect site for the Final Four.

You don't need to be a college basketball superstar to show your skills at this year's Whataburger Roundball Ruckus, May 1 and 2 at the Alamodome. The Whataburger Roundball Ruckus 3-on-3 tournament is the Sports Foundation's weekend basketball festival open to players of all ages and skill levels, male and female.
