The Road to the Final Four® Passes Through San Antonio

Congrats to the University of Texas for their incredible performance during the 2003 NCAA Men's South Regional Championship. We hope their success in San Antonio culminates in being crowned as National Champs next week in New Orleans. Kudos to all the tournament teams for making the event in San Antonio first class! Receiving top marks again: the City of San Antonio, the Alamodome, the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Sports Foundation -- all of whom comprise the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC).

This is great news considering San Antonio is a finalist to bring back a Women's and Men's Final Four to San Antonio for 2008, '09, '10 or '11. That vote will take place in June, and hopefully we can celebrate bringing the biggest sporting event coming back to the Alamo City! Thanks to all who supported this year's event. Patron package holders were treated to another great pre-game party at the Institute of Texan Cultures. We appreciate all who worked to make the hospitality event a huge success. Once again, thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who logged in so many hours to make the weekend run smoothly. It hardly seems possible that the Final Four in San Antonio is one year away! Actually, I can't wait!

NCAA® Tournament Fans Celebrate San Antonio Style

As a major force of the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee, the staff and volunteers of the Sports Foundation were everywhere during the 2003 NCAA Men's South Regional. The River Rally which took place on Friday afternoon, March 28, was a great opportunity for the fans of UT, UConn, Michigan State and the University of Maryland to show their team spirit. Led by UTSA president Dr. Ricardo Romo and a group of SALOC and civic leaders on a river barge, the River Rally featured the bands and cheerleaders from each of the four visiting schools. Each school's representatives rode Yanaguana river barges along San Antonio's beautiful Riverwalk into the Rivercenter Mall lagoon where they led their fans in cheers and fight songs for several minutes. The wonderful weather and high spirits were a perfect kickoff to a weekend of basketball celebration.

The party continued Friday evening at the Institute of Texan Cultures for "A Tribute to our Host Institution UTSA" presented by the Sports Foundation. The pre-game party was attended by hundreds of college hoops fans, most of whom purchased their ticket packages through SALOC. Great food prepared by Don Strange Caterers and terrific music presented by the Billy Ray Sheppard Quartet got everyone in the mood for a fun, exciting evening of competition.

Roundball Ruckus is on the Move

SALOC to Visit New Orleans

There's no rest for the weary! Just a few days after hosting a successful Men's South Regional at the Alamodome, the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) is on the move to New Orleans. In preparation for hosting the 2004 Men's Final Four in San Antonio next year, representatives from the Sports Foundation, UTSA, the City and the Alamodome are scheduled to travel to New Orleans later this week.

As the organizing committee, the NCAA expects SALOC to review everything from security issues to game operations; hospitality venues to crowd and media management. The SALOC team will bring their findings back to San Antonio to ensure that we stage a terrific Men's Final Four next year!

Dreams for Youth Ahtletes Get In the Game

Even the Sports Foundation's Dreams for Youth athletes got in on the action during the Men's South Regional. On Thursday, March 27, more than 50 Dreams for Youth gymnasts and fencers from the Southside I.S.D. attended the teams' open practices at the Alamodome. Holding hand made signs and showing unbridled enthusiasm, the Dreams for Youth athletes cheered on each team during its time on the court. They gave all the teams equal attention, but some just couldn't contain their true feelings.

“I just love T.J. Ford ," said Selina, a big UT fan. "He is my favorite player, I can’t believe I get to sit here and watch him in person and not just on television . ”

The Dreams for Youth athletes impressed visiting media from across the country with their cheering. Their pictures were found on TV stations and in newspapers across the country later Thursday and on Friday -- great representatives of San Antonio and the Sports Foundation!

Dreams For Youth/CODP provides training in six Olympic sports including fencing, gymnastics, badminton, swimming, diving and volleyball for more than 9,000 primarily disadvantaged San Antonio children each year. To learn more, contact Alma Striker at 210-820-2113 or astriker@sanantoniosports.org.

Volunteers are the Heart of SALOC Success

Whether its the 2003 Men's South Regional or the 2004 Men's Final Four, Sheila Jones and Mary Holland are orchestrating the volunteer effort that delivers a great experience to the NCAA, visiting teams, coaches and crowds. As the volunteer coordinators for SALOC, they work with Sports Foundation volunteer director Nancy Christensen to organize the hundreds of dedicated individuals who give their time to insure the success of our NCAA events.

“We love being involved in new and exciting activities, making new friends, and giving back to the community,” says Holland who, along with Jones, will select chairpersons for various committees who will staff airport and hotel welcomes, transportation, hospitality and communications efforts, and the SALOC command center. In turn, the committee chairs are empowered to recruit volunteers to fulfill their committee’s responsibilities.

“We make sure the committee chairs are experienced volunteers who’ve worked with SALOC during previous NCAA events,” explained Jones. “Fortunately, we have many dedicated and talented individuals to choose from. Our volunteers are the best!”

To become one of the more than 1,500 volunteers needed to host the 2004 Men's Final Four, sign up online or call 210-820-2191 to request an application. Individuals and corporate volunteer groups are welcome.
