Spring is Here and We're Ready

Another great spring awaits us and the San Antonio Sports Foundation will be ready to party! Don’t miss the pre-game reception and salute to our host institution, UTSA, just prior to the first game of the NCAA Men’s South Regional Basketball Championship. Mark your calendars for Friday, March 28, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Institute of Texan Cultures. Hold your spot by ordering tickets today. Contact Jenny Carnes at 210-820-2104 or jcarnes@sanantoniosports.org. We thank Athletic Director Lynn Hickey and her staff at UTSA for their dedication and high level of game expertise in putting on the NCAA events.

The Alamodome parking lots on May 3-4 are where you’ll find the action for the Roundball Ruckus, the Sports Foundation’s weekend 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Sign your team up now online and sharpen up your shot! There is a division for everyone.

Let’s start now and do what we all can to rid San Antonio of the disappointing reputation of being the #1 fattest city in the nation. Get out and get even with the naysayers who label us that way!

Digging for Dough – Krispy Kreme provides sweet fundraiser for Dreams for Youth

On Friday, February 28, 9-year-old Dreams for Youth athlete Sabastian Martinez went digging for “dough” at the Krispy Kreme ground breaking ceremony for their new location at Hwy. 281 and Loop 1604. Sabastian unearthed a coffee mug with 50 Krispy Kreme partner cards that can be sold for $10 each to benefit Dreams for Youth. The cards entitle the holder to a dozen free donuts for every dozen purchased, up to ten dozen. Dreams for Youth was one of a dozen San Antonio area non-profit groups selected by Krispy Kreme to benefit from the fundraising effort. Good job, Sabastian, and thank you, Krispy Kreme!

Fencing Sisters Focus on Gold

Kelley and Courtney Hurley aren’t even old enough to drive, but they are old enough to set their sights firmly on Olympic gold. The sisters are fencers in the Sports Foundation’s Community Olympic Development Program (CODP), a partnership with the US Olympic Committee.

Last month, Kelley, 14, placed third in the 2003 Junior Olympics in Colorado and is set to travel to Italy next month to compete in the World Championships in the twenty years old and younger category. In 2002, Kelley and Courtney, 12, each won two North American Circuit and two National Championship titles in their age groups. This year, Kelley has claimed a number one ranking in the under seventeen women category and has been placed on the Cadet World Team.

The Hurley sisters are just two of the highly talented and competitive athletes in the CODP program. Their mom, who is also an accomplished fencer, says the benefits of participation extend beyond athletic achievement.

“The program has helped with the girls’ self-esteem and confidence,” says Tracey Hurley. “They are doing great in school and their overall attitudes have improved.”

Dreams For Youth/CODP provides training in six Olympic sports including fencing, gymnastics, badminton, swimming, diving and volleyball for more than 9,000 primarily disadvantaged San Antonio children each year. To learn more, contact Alma Striker at 210-820-2113 or astriker@sanantoniosports.org.

Volunteers...the Secret to Our Success

Sports Foundation staff members often say that it would be impossible to operate our organization without the support of our volunteers. Here’s the proof: in 2002, Sports Foundation volunteers logged more than 13,000 hours to help put on successful events, sustain our youth programs, and maintain our office. While thousands of volunteers are to be commended for the donation of their time and talent, a certain few deserve special recognition.

These individuals gave more than 200 hours of their time to the Sports Foundation last year: Anthony Garza, Malcolm and Ethel Grieg, Billie and Tom May and Bessie Flewellen. In fact, Bessie was spending so much of her time at the Sports Foundation office – more than 400 hours -- we hired her! She is now a part-time employee overseeing our database management.

These dedicated souls donated more than 100 hours of time to the Sports Foundation last year: Paul Colliander, Clarence Johnson, Ruth and Virgil Mielke, Kathy and Olan Philips, Jo Lowe and Pam Fleming.

If you’d like to join these fun, lively and talented folks as a volunteer with the Sports Foundation, please contact Nancy Christensen at 210-820-2191 or click here for a volunteer application.
