Thanks to the literally hundreds of volunteers and an incredible Sports Foundation staff for staging two successful events in a short 48 hours. It all revolved around Friday, February 13th…what more can we expect!

Congrats to all the 2004 Sports Hall of Fame inductees. Thanks for all you did to make the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute such a magnificent event. What fun! Never miss it again if you were not one of the partygoers. To the committee chairman and members…you are the best!

Thanks to all who made the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge Whataburger Victory Lap Celebration a success just a few hours later. There are too many people to thank by name, so I’ll just thank all of the volunteers and staff for their time, efforts and dedication. When Sports Foundation chairman Jim Callaway left the Go!Kids event, he left me note that will be etched in my memory forever – “You guys are amazing.”

We do have an amazing team, and I personally want to thank those who make these special events happen. You have a passion for this organization and want to do whatever you can to provide the finest service to the individuals and companies from whom we receive support.

Don’t be bashful! We need your feedback on these and every Sports Foundation event. Also, help me thank the dedicated volunteers and staff members who work hard to make the Sports Foundation a real force in this community.

Sports Hall of Fame A Stellar Success

On Thursday night, February 12, the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute celebrated a decade of legends by inducting five new members: Gary Bell, Betty Dodd, Joel Horlen, David Robinson and Robert C. Zamora. The gala event at the Alamodome, including a silent and live auction, netted about $94,000 for the Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth program. More than 1,000 guests attended, the largest crowd in the Tribute's ten-year history. In addition to honoring the new inductees, the program also recognized the pioneers of the Sports Hall of Fame and the founders of the San Antonio Sports Foundation, which celebrates it's 20th anniversary in 2004.

If you missed the show, a broadcast of highlights from the 2004 San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute is available on Time Warner Cable Free Video on Demand channel 920. Just check under the Community category to locate the program. A special thank you to Time Warner Cable for making this production available to the public.

Thank you to everyone who made the 10th Anniversary of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute such a grand success.

Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge Wraps First Year

On Saturday morning, February 14, more than 10,000 people braved the cold, icy weather to participate in the Sports Foundation’s Whataburger Victory Lap Celebration at the Alamodome, which marked the culmination of the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™. About 2,500 children were awarded their Go!Kids finisher t-shirts and medals after completing the 19-week walking program that began on October 1, 2003. Thousands more who could not attend the Victory Lap Celebration will receive their finisher medals at school this week.

More than 100,000 children in 180 elementary schools from six area school districts have been involved in the first year of the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™, an event created by the Sports Foundation to motivate children in grades K-5 to make activity a regular part of a healthy lifestyle.

Thank you to the children, their families, teachers and district administrators who supported this inaugural Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge. A special thank you to the Go!Kids sponsors: Diamond Shamrock Corner Stores/Valero, Whataburger, Coke (Dansani Water), Subway, Kraft Foods, SBC, Methodist Healthcare, Mission Pharmacal, Creative Link, Humana, Community First Health Plans, Frost Bank, Security Service Federal Credit Union, Clear Channel Radio, News 4 WOAI, and DPT Laboratories.

Get Well, Coyote!

As many people have heard, the San Antonio Spurs Coyote, also known as Tim Derk, is hospitalized with an as yet undetermined illness. For 21 years, Tim has been the unidentified talent and spirit behind the Coyote’s beloved persona. His family and the Spurs chose to reveal his identity at this time so that the Coyote’s many fans could send Tim their well wishes and prayers.

Tim is a great friend of the Sports Foundation and has made appearances at many, if not most of our events over the years. We wish Tim, his wife and children and the entire Spurs family our very best.
Get well, Coyote! We love you!

CODP Fencer Makes National Team

Community Olympic Development Program (CODP) fencer Mark Kubik, a junior at Reagan High School, won a bronze medal this past weekend at the U.S. Junior Olympic Championships in Cleveland, OH. His third place in Junior Men’s Foil finish assured Mark a spot on the U.S. Cadet National Team that will compete in the Cadet World Championships in Bulgaria in April. This is the first age category in which a world fencing championship is held.

Mark has been fencing since he was five and is coached by his father, Wendell Kubik. His two brothers also are outstanding fencers. All three have been fencing with the CODP since moving to San Antonio from Germany in 1997. Mark is currently ranked third in national team points. Only the top three in each category compete in the Cadet World Championships

According to Wendell Kubik, the CODP and Sports Foundation’s fencing program has had a tremendous impact on Mark’s ability to develop into one of the top youth fencers in America. “Mark has a grueling schedule, competing in international, national, regional and local competitions. Much of the travel necessary to compete at this level would not be possible without the support of the Sports Foundation.” Wendell adds that all three of his sons also enjoy the Sports Foundation’s excellent facilities, equipment and coaching.

Kids & Harleys Makes Contribution

The San Antonio Sports Foundation's Dreams for Youth program received $45,000 this week as one of the charities benefiting from the 2003 For the Love of Kids & Harleys gala, which took place in October 2003. More than 1,500 local Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts and philanthropists gathered at Cowboys, formerly Far West Rodeo, setting the record for highest attendance at this annual benefit. Other charities receiving distributions included Easter Seals, Any Baby Can, Friends of Ronald McDonald House and Respite Care.
