What an exciting time to be part of the 2004 Sports Foundation team! The next three months are packed full of happenings beginning with the 2004 San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute.

I hope that you don’t miss the incredible induction ceremony on February 12th, but as important is seeing the unbelievable job that Janet Holliday, Liz Fritz, Madeline Harlan, Bonnie Munroe, Rick Smith, Phil Miner and the entire Sports Foundation Board of Directors do in making this memorable night possible. We thank the Tribute Chairs Mayor Ed Garza, Larry Walker and Jim Callaway with entrusting us with this very special evening.

Making this year’s Hall of Fame event even better…we will honor all the Hall of Fame members, the Sport Foundation’s founders as they celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Foundation, and the original “pioneers” who got the Hall of Fame gala off the ground just a short ten years ago.

Two days later on Valentine’s Day join us at the Alamodome at 10:00 a.m. for the kick off of the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge Whataburger Victory Lap Celebration. Be there as thousands of participants finish their last lap completing their 26 miles of walking since October 1st. They will also receive special medals for their accomplishment. Thanks to the many sponsors that have made this event possible and to the school districts for their cooperation during the 19-week fitness routine.

In less than sixty days, we will have the 2004 NCAA® Final Four® behind us and thousands of people will leave San Antonio with a very positive impression of our incredible city! We still need YOU to assist us with filling the last volunteer spots on our transportation team or in Hoop City for the fun! Our volunteers are our greatest assets, and I know they won’t let us down for this incredible event for our community.

Subway and Spurs Support Go!Kids

Congratulations to Ms. Wampler’s class at Jackson-Keller Elementary! Subway and the San Antonio Spurs asked individuals in schools and in Subway stores to vote for their favorite Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ class. The top vote getters were Ms. Wampler’s class and Ms. Lee and Ms. Hamilton’s class at Hardy Oak Elementary. The teachers and several children from their classes were introduced at center court during last Saturday’s Spurs Game where Ms. Wampler’s class was announced as the overall winner. Her school will receive a visit from one of the San Antonio Spurs. Thanks to everyone who voted for a favorite Go!Kids class.

By the way, Jared, Subway’s popular national spokesperson is scheduled to be at the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ Whataburger Victory Lap Celebration on February 14 at the Alamodome.

CODP Fencers Excel in Competitions

On Feb. 3 in St. Petersburg, Russia, Community Olympic Development Program (CODP) fencer Mark Kubick placed sixth (out of 120 entries) in the Designated Cadet (under 17) Men's Foil B competition.

On Jan. 24th, he and his brother Steve Kubick competed in the Poujardeau Memorial in San Marcos. This is the largest adult open fencing tournament in Texas. Mark and Steve finished 1st and 2nd out of a field of 67 foil fencers. Also at this tournament, CODP fencer Kristen Howell placed first in the Women's Cadet Epee. She is currently ranked 10th in the nation in Women's Cadet Epee.

Dreams for Youth Delivers Results on the Southside

Many parents in San Antonio can’t afford to provide their children with after school activities. That’s why Dreams for Youth has an after-school program that annually serves over 1,600 children in disadvantaged areas of San Antonio.

Dreams for Youth came to Southside ISD three years ago where after-school programs had been very limited. Southside encompasses a primarily rural area and 80% of the students come from homes at or below the poverty line. According to Dr. Sharon Doughty, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, the program has really made a difference. “Through the fencing and gymnastics, students learn the intangible but vital lessons of personal discipline, teamwork, determination and commitment.” She adds that the children also benefit from the examples set by their instructors. “They have one more adult in their life who provides them with the message that they are important, valuable and can achieve anything they dare to dream.”

Dreams for Youth provides 500 students per year at Southside ISD schools with an activity (fencing and/or gymnastics), character education, and tutoring. Students must have good attendance and good grades to participate. The goal is to develop higher self-esteem, lower truancy, dropout and pregnancy rates, increase attendance rates, and discourage at-risk activities such as substance abuse and juvenile crime.

Become a patron of the Sports Foundation and support Dreams for Youth and other Foundation programs that uplift the youth of our community.

Johnson Honored with NCAA Silver Award

San Antonio Olympian Stacey Johnson, who began fencing as a young girl and today is the president of the United States Fencing Association, was honored by the NCAA with the Silver Award at the NCAA Honors Dinner, January 11 in Nashville. The Silver Award recognizes former student-athletes who have distinguished themselves since finishing their intercollegiate athletics careers 25 years ago.

A four-time all-American and a four-year letter-winner in fencing from 1976 to 1979 at San Jose State, Johnson helped the team capture two national championships. She also was a national champion in 1976 and 1978. Johnson was a three-time United States national team champion and a member of the 1980 Olympic team.

Johnson is a member of the US Olympic Committee’s executive committee and the Sports Foundation board of directors. She is also the founder of the Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth program. When she is not advocating for the sport of fencing, Johnson is the dean of arts, humanities and social sciences at Palo Alto College. ESPN2 will rebroadcast the 2004 NCAA Honors Dinner at 2 p.m. on February 6.

Congratulations, Stacey!
