Benefits for Young Women in Sports Reach Beyond Activity

Studies show that girls involved in sports programs are more likely to experience academic success and graduate from high school. Female participants also have above average levels of self esteem, less depression, greater self confidence and more pride in their physical and social selves. Teenage female athletes are less than half as likely to become pregnant as female non-athletes, and are more likely to report that they've never had sexual intercourse. They are also more likely to experience their first sexual intercourse later in adolescence than female non-athletes.

Knowing this, we are proud to report that more than 2,000 girls participate in the Sports Foundation's Dreams for Youth and Community Olympic Development programs annually. Thanks to all the supporters of the San Antonio Sports Foundation who make all of our programs for boys and girls possible.

On February 5th we celebrate National Girls and Women's Sports Day. Congrats to all the female participants who continue to enjoy the benefits of activity!

San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute

On Friday, February 7, five deserving individuals will be officially inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame at the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, a black-tie gala and silent auction staged on the floor of the Alamodome. The City of San Antonio, The San Antonio Express-News and the San Antonio Sports Foundation sponsor the Sports Hall of Fame. We conclude our profiles of the Class of 2003 with former San Antonio Spur, Johnny Moore.

Johnny MooreJohnny Moore played nine seasons in the National Basketball Association from 1980 to 1990, all of them with the San Antonio Spurs. He held the team record for assists with 3,685 and led the NBA in assists for the ’81-82 season with an average of 9.6 per game. He had his best season in 1984-85 when he averaged 12.8 points, 10 assists and 2.79 steals in 82 games. Moore was diagnosed with Desert Fever, a rare form of meningitis, in 1986. He returned to the Spurs and the NBA as a role model of determination and played for three additional seasons. In 1998, the Spurs retired Moore’s “00”, only the third number to be retired in Spurs history.

Moore will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame along with football greats Linus Baer and Warren McVea, Olympic volleyball player Demetria Sance and Negro League Baseball legend John Miles. Proceeds from the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute benefit Dreams for Youth, a program of the Sports Foundation.

Basketball Fever is Coming!

While San Antonio’s 2004 NCAA Men’s Final Four is still a year away, New Orleans is getting ready for their big “dance” in April. Last month, San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) Executive Director, Wendy McCauley attended the New Orleans Executive Committee and LOC meetings to hear their plans for the 2003 Men’s Final Four.

“The benefit of attending these meetings on everything from hotel preparations to global security will certainly be reflected in our planning stages,” said Wendy. “And ticket packages for our 2004 Final Four are going fast, so now is the time to buy!”

As few as 25-$3,000 ticket packages and 2-$25,000 ticket packages remain for the 2003 Men’s South Regional and 2004 Final Four. A sell-out in anticipated in the next few months, so now is the time to get guaranteed tickets to the 2004 Final Four in San Antonio!

Dreams for Youth Athletes Become Role Models

Two of the presenters at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame on February 7, will be shinning examples the Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth (DFY) program. Christina Cabanilla and José Sanchez embody what Dreams for Youth stands for and how the program can enhance a child’s life.

For José, who first experienced DFY fencing as a senior at Harlandale High School, fencing became his ticket to the world. As a competitor, Jose has traveled nationally and internationally to take on elite fencers. Eventually, his DFY coach, Olympian Vinnie Bradford, encouraged him to become a coach as well. Currently the only Hispanic fencing coach in the Southern region, Jose now teaches daily fencing classes to DFY athletes at the Dreams for Youth gym, 300 San Pedro.

“I just want the program to grow. I don’t care if I even get credit. I’m just getting to do something that no one else is doing,” says José.

Christina attended DFY camps during her high school years at Harlandale High School. She is currently a coach for a DFY sixteen and under volleyball team while playing volleyball herself at Saint Mary’s University on a scholarship. A good student and dedicated coach, Christina enjoys being a roll model and wants to encourage the girls she coaches.

“The girls love the game. They’re not here just because their parents are making them come; they are here because they want to be here. They have wonderful attitudes,” says Christina.

Dreams for Youth provides training in six Olympic sports: volleyball, fencing, swimming, diving, badminton and gymnastics.

For more information about volleyball or any of the six Olympic sports in Dreams for Youth, contact Alma Striker at 210-820-2113 or astriker@sanantoniosports.org.

For months now, Liz Fritz, Cynthia Ellison and Ralph Bender have been securing fabulous vacation packages, sports memorabilia, and other fun and useful items for the silent auction at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, February 7. As volunteer co-chairs of the silent auction, Liz, Cynthia and Ralph, are working tirelessly to make this the best silent auction ever.

"We have more than 225 great items," says Fritz. "Guests can bid on everything from an island getaway in Belize to a Lance Armstrong autograph." Want a sneak preview of some of the top items up for bid? Just click on the Sports Foundation's Hall of Fame website for complete information about the Tribute.

Proceeds from the Tribute and silent auction benefit the Sports Foundation's Dreams for Youth program. "It's really exciting to touch the lives of so many San Antonio children in this way," says Fritz.

Thanks to Liz, Cynthia and Ralph for their unending energy and unwavering dedication to the Sports Foundation and our promising young Dreams for Youth athletes.
