Studies show that girls involved in sports programs are more likely to experience academic success and graduate from high school. Female participants also have above average levels of self esteem, less depression, greater self confidence and more pride in their physical and social selves. Teenage female athletes are less than half as likely to become pregnant as female non-athletes, and are more likely to report that they've never had sexual intercourse. They are also more likely to experience their first sexual intercourse later in adolescence than female non-athletes. Knowing this, we are proud to report that more than 2,000 girls participate in the Sports Foundation's Dreams for Youth and Community Olympic Development programs annually. Thanks to all the supporters of the San Antonio Sports Foundation who make all of our programs for boys and girls possible. On February 5th we celebrate
National Girls and Women's Sports Day. Congrats to all the female participants
who continue to enjoy the benefits of activity! |

While San Antonio’s 2004 NCAA Men’s Final Four is still a year away, New Orleans is getting ready for their big “dance” in April. Last month, San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) Executive Director, Wendy McCauley attended the New Orleans Executive Committee and LOC meetings to hear their plans for the 2003 Men’s Final Four. “The benefit of attending these meetings on everything from hotel preparations to global security will certainly be reflected in our planning stages,” said Wendy. “And ticket packages for our 2004 Final Four are going fast, so now is the time to buy!” As few as 25-$3,000 ticket packages and 2-$25,000 ticket packages remain for the 2003 Men’s South Regional and 2004 Final Four. A sell-out in anticipated in the next few months, so now is the time to get guaranteed tickets to the 2004 Final Four in San Antonio!

Dreams for Youth Athletes Become Role Models Two of the presenters at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame on February 7, will be shinning examples the Sports Foundation’s Dreams for Youth (DFY) program. Christina Cabanilla and José Sanchez embody what Dreams for Youth stands for and how the program can enhance a child’s life.
Christina attended DFY
camps during her high school years at Harlandale High School. She
is currently a coach for a DFY sixteen and under volleyball team
while playing volleyball herself at Saint Mary’s University
on a scholarship. A good student and dedicated coach, Christina
enjoys being a roll model and wants to encourage the girls she coaches. Dreams for Youth provides
training in six Olympic sports: volleyball, fencing, swimming, diving,
badminton and gymnastics. For more information about volleyball or any of the six Olympic sports in Dreams for Youth, contact Alma Striker at 210-820-2113 or astriker@sanantoniosports.org.
