2003...what a year we have in store for San Antonio! The San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute on February 7, promises to be a terrific event you won't want to miss. Thanks once again to our incredible committee led by Janet Holliday. To the entire crew...Madeline Harlan, Liz Fritz, Cynthia Ellison, Bonnie Munroe and their host of committee members, we applaud your efforts in advance of the great evening. The Dreams for Youth participants and coaches also extend their gratitude for your support of their sports programs.

2003 will be a year that the Sports Foundation continues to build upon its reputation of hosting quality events such as the NCAA Men's South Regional Tournament and the Big 12 Soccer Tournament. There will also be much focus placed on our community youth events -- the Roundball Ruckus, the Mayor's Kids Fitness Challenge, the Rampage Round-Up. We have high expectations for engaging the community in these wholesome events.

Of course, this is also a year that the Sports Foundation staff will work hard to secure a variety of bids. As finalists for the next rounds of Men's and Women's Final Fours and initiating a new effort to secure the Big 12 Basketball tournaments, we are taking critical steps to build upon the city's tourism efforts. Other bids being submitted include junior national championships, invitational tournaments and national/international sports meetings.

We need the whole team rooting for our success, and we're counting on you!

San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute

On Friday, February 7, five deserving individuals will be officially inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame at the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, a black-tie gala and silent auction staged on the floor of the Alamodome. The City of San Antonio, The San Antonio Express-News and the San Antonio Sports Foundation sponsor the Sports Hall of Fame. We continue our profiles of the Class of 2003 with John "Mule" Miles and Demetria Sance.

John Miles was playing baseball in his free time at Kelly Army Air Field in 1946, when he was recruited to play in the Negro Baseball League. Signed by the Chicago American Giants, Miles played in the Negro Leagues from 1946-1949. As an outfielder, Miles hit 11 homeruns in 11 games in 1947 -- a record that would still stand today had he been playing in the Major Leagues. Miles earned the nickname "Mule" when a coach remarked that he hit as hard as a mule.

Demetria Sance has been a volleyball standout since her days at Jay High School where as a freshman she led her team to the 1991 Class 5A state volleyball championship. At the University of Texas, she earned All-America honors four consecutive seasons and went on to represent the USA in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Today, Demetria shares her talent as a coach for young volleyball players.

Miles and Sance will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame along with fellow football greats Linus Baer and Warren McVea, and former San Antonio Spur Johnny Moore. Proceeds from the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute benefit Dreams for Youth, a program of the Sports Foundation.

Giving children the opportunity to experience healthy competition is important to the Sports Foundation's Dreams for Youth (DFY) and Community Olympic Development programs. Our volleyball teams are embracing competition and winning! After the first of three tournaments in the IH-35 Volleyball League, the DFY 12-and-under team is currently in first place. The DFY 14-and-under teams are holding on to first and second place. Way to go girls and keep up the great work!

More than 80 girls, ages 10-16 currently play in the DFY volleyball club. During the summer, DFY hosts a volleyball league that attracts about 400 girls. Additionally, about 100 players participate in DFY volleyball camps and clinics. For more information about volleyball or any of the six Olympic sports in Dreams for Youth, contact Alma Striker at 210-820-2113 or astriker@sanantoniosports.org.

our team

Janet Holliday has been a volunteer, sponsor and board member of the San Antonio Sports Foundation for years. She co-chairs the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute with Madeline Harlan. When she's not donating her time and talent to the Sports Foundation, she and partner Lainey Berkus work hard for Clever Endeavors, their public relations, special event and convention services company.

Janet Holliday, in her own words:

" I volunteer with the Sports Foundation for several reasons. First I believe in the Dreams for Youth program, and how sport opportunities can transform the lives of young people. Second, I am active in things that promote our city. The major sporting events that the Sports Foundation have helped to bring to San Antonio are all a key part of what makes our city such a great place to live and to visit. Finally, I like the teamwork and the incredible relationships that are a part of every project of the Sports Foundation...it's a great team!!!!"
