When we figure out where 2003 went, it will be time to cheer in the 2004 New Year and the many events that await! I remember just like it was yesterday when we were thrilled to be awarded the honor of hosting the 2004 NCAA® Men’s Final Four®. It seemed like it would take forever to get here. Guess what… fewer than 87 days!

So much more for 2004. The year begins with one of the finest San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tributes on February 12. Don’t miss it. It is a very special class of inductees, and you will want to be there to share these special memories with the rest of the sports “nuts” in San Antonio. Get your friends and sit together for a merry time for all! See the Alamodome turned into a “Gala” experience.

On Valentine’s Day, join us at 10:00 a.m. for the Whataburger Victory Lap Celebration opening ceremonies and support the boys and girls who have finished their Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ 26 miles. We are so proud of every K thru 5th grader who has logged about ¼ mile a day to establish this important exercise routine.

2004 will be a fun filled year highlighted by our 20th Anniversary. Thanks to the SASF founders who will be honored at the Hall of Fame Tribute, sports and high profile sporting events are a foundation of our community. Happy Birthday to us!

Don’t miss out…become a patron of the Foundation today. We need you on the team!

State Comptroller Says Final Four is Slam Dunk for San Antonio

Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn has predicted $108.5 million dollars in economic gains to Texas when the NCAA® Final Four® comes to San Antonio in April. Strayhorn also said that $5 million in increased state revenue will be available as state matching funds to help San Antonio pay for the event.

"This is a New Year's slam dunk for both the Alamo City and the Lone Star State. Nearly 50,000 out-of-town visitors will spend nearly $54 million during their stay in San Antonio," Strayhorn said.

Senate Bill 275, passed by the 78th Legislature, requires the Comptroller to forecast revenue gains from increased collections from increased collections from sales, motor vehicle, hotel occupancy and alcohol taxes in the market area of a major sporting event. Based on a formula in S.B. 275, a portion of the expected tax revenue increase will be placed in a new "Other Events Trust Fund" to help defray expenses related to the Final Four tournament.

"We're grateful to Comptroller Strayhorn and her staff for their role in securing these dollars for San Antonio," said Sports Foundation chairman Jim Callaway. "It is great news that tax dollars generated by the Final Four will stay in our community."

DFY Families Celebrate Happy Holidays

Thanks to the generosity of the Sports Foundation's many friends who brought gifts to our Holiday Open House on December 12, two families with children in our Dreams for Youth gymnastics and fencing programs had a particularly Merry Christmas. On December 19, Sports Foundation staff members delivered toys and food to the Culp family, which has six children. The Rodriguez's and their three children also received toys and goodies to help make their season a little brighter. Thank you to everyone who shared their holiday spirit with our Dreams for Youth families.

A Chance to Score ’05 Volleyball Championship Tickets

A small San Antonio delegation attended the 2003 NCAA® Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship in Dallas last month in preparation for hosting the championship tournament in 2005 in the Alamo City.

The trip provided a great behind-the-scenes look at the tournament, helped promote the 2005 championship tournament to Texas volleyball fans and kicked-off a San Antonio ticket giveaway. You can still enter for a chance to win two tickets to the 2005 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship, scheduled for December 15 and 17 at the Alamodome. Just click here to enter!

The drawing will be held February 2, 2004. Good luck!

Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ Brings Celebs to Schools

Sports and media celebrities visited two local elementary schools last month to help motivate Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge™ participants to stay on track toward completing their goal of walking 26.2 miles by February 14.

At Royal Ridge Elementary in the North East ISD, champion triathlete and pentathlete Sharon Sander shared her strategy of fitness and success. She was joined by News 4 WOAI-TV's Randy Escamilla who urged the kids to keep walking every day. At Oak Hills Terrace Elementary in the Northside ISD, News 4 WOAI anchor Randy Beamer interviewed world-class runner and UTSA coach Rose Monday before an assembly of enthusiastic children.

Rose showed the kids some of her many medals and talked about how she began training as a young girl. Several of her UTSA track athletes also shared their stories with the children, then they all walked several laps around the school yard with the Diamond Shamrock Go!Kids Challenge participants. Randy videotaped the walk and aired the Go!Kids story on News 4 WOAI later that night.

Thanks to coaches Olivia Brown at Royal Ridge and Raul Orozco at Oak Hills Terrace for inviting these celebrities to their campuses and for being role models every day for the hundreds of children they teach.

CODP Sets Course for Air Force Fencer

For sophomore Caitlin Harris, the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Colorado Springs is a world away from her former life in San Antonio. Recruited by the Academy because of her fencing skills, Caitlin is a Community Olympic Development Program (CODP) success story.

Caitlin is an “A” rated fencer, and until last year, was ranked in the top 10. She’s taking the year off from fencing to rehabilitate a shoulder injury. According to her mom, if it hadn’t been for the Sports Foundation's CODP, she never would have competed nationally. “It opened so many doors for her,” says Julie Harris. It also attracted the AFA’s attention.

Caitlin says she’s “surviving” at the Academy, which she admits is the hardest thing she’s done in her life. Ranked first in her graduating class at the International School of the Americas, Caitlin finds the AFA academically and physically demanding and challenging. “Being a part of the CODP, I learned how much hard work pays off. I was rewarded when I did well. I did well when I practiced hard.”

Caitlin’s ultimate goal is to compete in the Olympics. “Fencing was one of my main reasons for going to school here,” she says. “I knew financially I would not be able to follow my dreams of reaching the Olympics either through modern pentathlon or fencing. But I know that with hard work and financial support from the AFA, I will be able to reach the level of competition needed to make the Olympic Games.”

Dress Rehearsal a Success

With the turn of the New Year, there are fewer than 12 weeks to go before March Madness® takes over the Alamo City. As Dick Vitale would say, “It’s crunch time baby!!”

December 18th marked SALOC’s latest step in the right direction for tournament preparation with a very successful dress rehearsal for UTSA’s game management team and the Alamodome staff. The venue was in the required Final Four® configuration for a Division I match-up between UTSA and A&M, and the evening went off without a hitch. Great job to Final Four tournament director Scott Street and all of those involved. A big thank you to everyone in attendance!

SALOC ticket and hospitality packages are still available for purchase by calling Jenny Carnes at 210-820-2104 or by clicking here.

Calling All Volunteers!

The Sports Foundation needs volunteers to answer our main phone line and greet guests during business hours. It's a great opportunity for retirees who might like to spend a morning or afternoon with us at the Alamodome. And it's good experience for volunteers who have signed up to man the phone bank during the Final Four®.

If you're interested in contributing your time and talent to the Sports Foundation, we need you! Interested? E-mail Nancy Christensen or call her at 820-2191 for more information.
