Dreams for Youth Afterschool Program

Motivated by the community and school district administrations' concerns that low socio-economic status children do not get the same opportunities to succeed through sports as higher socio-economic students, San Antonio Sports launched the Dreams for Youth Afterschool Program in the fall of 2008 to address the issue.

Program Goal

To provide a safe, healthy afterschool environment for youth, specifically those at-risk of academic failure and poor health, to excel to their greatest potential:

  • by enriching and empowering our children
  • by building on their interests and strengths
  • by applauding their achievements
  • by working with the communities, schools and organizations
  • by planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating our program

Program Objectives

  • Our youth will grow socially throuDFY Afterschool Soccergh the use of character education curriculum
  • Our youth will grow emotionally by participating in health and recreation activities with their peers and afterschool leaders
  • Our youth will grow academically by developing and improving homework skills to reinforce learning during homework groups
  • Our youth will build on physical growth through movement activities
  • Our youth will develop good health and nutrition habits through snack and health supervision

Target Audience

Children in grades 3-5 from 9 elementary schools in the Harlandale ISD and San Antonio ISD

Program Activities

  • Mentoring and character education – focusing on core values, leadership, lifelong learning and deterring substance abuse
  • Messaging – continuous behavior messaging to support healthy choices and leading an active healthy lifestyle
  • Behavior – leadership and team building skills
  • Physical activity – skill-based instruction in 5 sports, 1 sport per unit (fall semester – soccer, tennis; spring semester – track, volleyball, golf) to engage students in learning through play
  • Nutrition education – daily healthy snacks to support healthy eating habits and education to support healthy food choices
  • Academic enrichment – homework groups to support academics
  • Family outreach – family engagement, community outreach activities
  • Communication – school-wide communications to promote positive change in the afterschool setting

  • Build on effective leadership skills
  • Learn to manage behavior and resolve conflict nonviolently
  • Learn positive alternative ways to spend their time during critical afterschool hours

  • Improve sport skills
  • Increase parental involvement in their child’s health and wellness
